Verdict

Verdict

Who should purchase the new Innova Hycross? And who should stay away from it?

Assume you want a car that will mostly be used in the city; one that will transport you to and from work on weekdays and then take the extended family out for weekend dinners. The new Innova Hycross with its hybrid drivetrain is an excellent choice for this purpose! It's roomy, loaded with features, comfy, and simple to drive. It can also be quite efficient in the city if used correctly. The benefits of a hybrid, if you will.

But suppose you typically drive long distances; you live in the hills and frequently drive your vehicle loaded; and you want something that also serves as a workhorse rather than simply a pampering pair of wheels.

Then you might want to reconsider using the Hycross. Its monocoque design, front-wheel drive system, and, of course, the absence of a diesel engine limit its utility and efficacy in such settings. Having said that, one cannot deny that it is much superior - on nearly every point - than previous Innovas.

Engine & PerformanceEngine & Performance

Engine & Performance

If we talk about the Hybrid variant, when you start rolling and ambling around at modest speeds, the first thing that hits you is the silence, effortlessness, and ease with which the Hycross travels. Its size and weight defy expectations. That is one of the major advantages of having a full-fledged hybrid.

Even when the Innova switches from EV-only mode to engine mode, it keeps the qualities of a slow but powerful mover. Drive it with a gentle yet progressive throttle, and it should smoothly integrate into your regular journey, never feeling lacking or sluggish.

When you floor the throttle in order to get faster acceleration or a higher turn of speed, it becomes rather noisy. This may seem irritating at first, but it becomes habitual since, while the two-litre engine is powerful when revved, it does not sound harsh.

However, once you reach your target speed - say, 100kmph or 120kmph - and release the throttle, the high rpm noise disappears. The Hycross then requires only modest prods to the throttle as it settles into a smooth, quiet, and relaxing drive.

Additionally, the throttle response is alert and simple to control. While the new Innova hybrid's acceleration may not pin you back in your seat, it never feels lazy, underpowered, or unimpressive.

Ride & Handling

Ride & Handling

The hybrid powertrain's ability to go the distance complements the Hycross' dynamic capabilities. Being a monocoque has several advantages. Because the body is stronger and the car is lighter, the suspension can balance the ride and handling characteristics far better than a ladder frame chassis.

In the case of the Innova Hycross, this has resulted in a comfortable, well-damped configuration with enough travel. So, whether it's low-frequency, high-amplitude interstate undulations or high-frequency, low-amplitude hassles like damaged roads or a series of plastic speed bumps, the ride on the Innova remains smooth and comfortable. There's no more pogoing, sharp thumps, or the regular body-on-ladder wobble. Furthermore, regardless of the row you are situated in, the trip stays peaceful and comfortable.

What we like about it is its straight-line solidity and rooted feel. It doesn't have the most comfortable steering, but it is precise and relatively speedy. Furthermore, even at speeds of 100kmph and higher, it manages to communicate a sense of certainty that inspires confidence.

Innova Hycross

There's also nothing to complain about in terms of braking, with the Hycross tracking straight and providing both a solid bite and linear progression when braking hard. The sponginess associated with regenerative braking, which is common in hybrids, will have to be adjusted to.

Exterior DesignExterior Design

Exterior Design

Toyota claims that the new Innova now follows SUV design principles rather than being an unapologetic MPV. It's especially noticeable when viewed from the front. The drawn-down bumper, squared wheel arches, and pronounced haunches all contribute to the vehicle's aggressive and contemporary appearance. It has a great back design as well, with a flat, buff tailgate and integrated tail lights.

The wheels may appear small in comparison to the overall size and presence of the car in profile, but they aren't a significant dampener. We also adore the chrome wheels.

Comfort, Convenience & Safety

Comfort, Convenience & Safety

The new Innova is longer and has a wider wheelbase. Furthermore, because it is a monocoque, there is extra room all around. With a high dash and wide sight lines on the hood, the driving posture seems more SUV than car up front. One is also higher up on the Innova. Furthermore, with well-designed A-pillars and big useable ORVMs, visibility is excellent all around. The driver's seat is also a pleasant place to be. The seat is spacious, comfortable, and supportive. There's also adequate elbow room and freedom to shift about in the foot well.

But it's in the second row that the new car's spaciousness truly shines. Even though it's a monocoque, the entry height hasn't been reduced compared to the earlier Innova, but the flat floor is a nice improvement. Furthermore, the greater length and wheelbase provide plenty of knee space. So much so that Toyota was able to include Ottoman chairs with adjustable footrests to pamper its passengers. Even in terms of head and shoulder room, there is plenty of room.

Meanwhile, the last row has its hits and misses. It takes some time to get to, given that there is no one-touch function and how long it takes for the electrically assisted backrest to tip forward. However, after seated, you notice that you are not sitting on the floor. Thigh support is adequate. There is sufficient head and knee space. Furthermore, the backrest adjusts to provide comfortable seating even on prolonged travels.

Toyota Innova Hycross

We disagree with Toyota's contention that the last row is a three-seater, despite the fact that it has three headrests and three three-point seat belts. It can easily seat two persons. But three is stretching it, unless the objective is to get under each other's armpit. By the way, even with all three rows in place, the boot is still large enough to handle some carry-on luggage.

Climate control with individual temperature and blower settings for the front and second-row passengers is included on this top-spec ZX model. The front seats are motorised and chilled, while the second row incorporates powered Ottoman captain chairs. A panoramic sunroof, a huge touchscreen entertainment system, a connect app, and cup and bottle storage are available for all three rows of passengers.

Toyota Innova Hycross

Aside from ABS and ESP, the top-spec Hycross also has six airbags and driving aids. Adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, auto high-beam assist, lane keep assist, and a pre-collision system are available only on the ZX Optional level. However, not everything about the new Innova Hycross is ideal. The quality levels for a car that costs more over 30 lakh rupees are, at best, inadequate. It might be the plastic or the fit and finish in certain spots. The rear doors also lack soft-touch plastic.
