Built with body-on-frame construction, the Jimny features a rigid front axle that enhances its off-road capabilities by maximizing articulation. However, it's worth noting that the Jimny's engine lacks excitement and power, struggling to keep up with highway traffic and falling short in terms of torque output compared to rivals like the Thar or Gurkha.

On the transmission front, Jimny's manual gearbox is characterized by clunky and notchy shifts, accompanied by a heavy clutch pedal. Opting for the automatic variant means settling for a dated 4-speed unit that may feel outdated to some.

In terms of handling, Jimny's steering demands effort from the driver and lacks precise feedback, resulting in a somewhat vague sensation. Additionally, its wide turning radius of 5.7m can make manoeuvring in tight spaces a challenge.

While the Jimny shines off the beaten path, its ride quality leaves something to be desired, especially on rough roads where imperfections become more pronounced. High-speed stability is also compromised, and the vehicle exhibits noticeable body roll in cornering situations.

The Jimny boasts a boxy and compact design that exudes a timeless aura of an off-road vehicle. With dimensions of 3,985mm in length, 1,645mm in width, and 1,720mm in height, it strikes a balance between manoeuvrability and presence on the road.

Embracing a retro-modern aesthetic, the Jimny captivates with its distinctive charm. Paying homage to its predecessors, it showcases a 5-slot grille, round headlamps, a clamshell bonnet, and flared wheel arches, all contributing to its unique character.

Adding to its allure, the Jimny offers a range of intriguing colour options and features a hard top, elevating its visual appeal. Notable exterior elements include LED headlamps with washers, tinted green glasses, and rear wash and wipe functionality.

Differentiating itself from the three-door variant available in international markets, the Jimny presents a five-door configuration, offering an extended length of 300mm. This enhancement allows for improved rear passenger space and the inclusion of rear doors. The square windows and vertical C-pillar glass are tastefully executed, enhancing the vehicle's overall design.

In terms of wheels, the Zeta trim of the Jimny comes equipped with 15-inch steel wheels, while the top-spec variant receives stylish alloys that not only add aesthetic value but also contribute to a reduction of 5 kilograms in kerb weight.

While the Jimny may not possess the same road presence as its rivals, such as the Thar or Gurkha, primarily due to its narrower width, it compensates with its unique design elements and compact proportions. However, it's worth noting that features like a sunroof, daytime running lights (DRLs), and a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) are absent from Jimny's offering.

Unfortunately, for those seeking the joy of open-top cruising or a more authentic off-roader appearance, the Jimny does not provide a soft-top convertible or a two-door variant option.

Stepping inside the Jimny, you'll find an interior that matches the vehicle's stylish and rugged exterior design. The cabin embraces a black and silver colour theme, accented by retro-inspired elements like the round air vents and a grab handle on the dashboard.

At the centre of attention is a sizable 9-inch touchscreen display, mounted atop the dashboard. This touchscreen supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, ensuring seamless connectivity. Additionally, it offers convenient features such as a reverse camera and navigation system. Accompanying the touchscreen is a 4-speaker sound system, complete with steering-mounted controls for easy access to audio functions.

The Jimny features a modern digital instrument cluster with a 4.2-inch MID (Multi-Information Display). This cluster provides essential information such as speed, rpm, fuel level, gear position, 4x4 status, and more. For long drives, the Jimny also includes a cruise control system with a dedicated stalk for effortless highway journeys.

Thanks to the extended wheelbase of the five-door version, the Jimny provides a comfortable and spacious cabin that can easily accommodate four adults. The front seats offer near-flat reclining functionality, delivering both support and excellent visibility. Additionally, the rear seats can be conveniently folded down to expand the available boot space.

Speaking of the boot, the Jimny offers a modest yet usable cargo area of 208 litres. Notably, a tailgate-mounted spare wheel adds to its off-road appeal. However, it's worth mentioning that the cabin lacks ample storage options and cubicles for organizing personal items.

Safety is taken seriously in the Jimny, as it comes equipped with a comprehensive set of features. This includes six airbags, 3-point seatbelts for all occupants, an electronic stability program (ESP), brake-based limited-slip differential, traction control, hill hold/descent control, and ISOFIX mounts for securing child seats.

While the Jimny impresses with its safety offerings, it does miss out on a few desirable features. These omissions include a sunroof, rear A/C vents, automatic wipers, tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), driver's seat height and lumbar adjustment, steering reach adjustment, auto-dimming internal rear-view mirror (IRVM), and a dead pedal for added driving comfort.

The Jimny stands out with its commendable safety features, ensuring the well-being of occupants on and off the road. It comes equipped with a comprehensive safety kit that includes six airbags, three-point seatbelts for all passengers, an electronic stability program (ESP), brake-based limited-slip differential, traction control, hill hold/descent control, and ISOFIX mounts for securing child seats.

Standard safety features on the Jimny also encompass ABS with EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution), Brake Assist, Speed Alert, and a Rearview camera, further enhancing safety during daily driving manoeuvres. Additionally, the Jimny boasts ALLGRIP PRO technology, enhancing its off-road capabilities and stability, and adding to the overall safety package.

In terms of crash test performance, the Jimny received a three-star rating from Euro NCAP based on evaluations conducted in 2018. Notably, it achieved a score of 4.6 out of 8 points in the frontal offset test and 5.8 out of 8 points in the frontal full-width test. In terms of child protection, it received a score of 16.4 out of 24 points, while pedestrian protection garnered a score of 6.8 out of 12 points.

During the frontal offset test, the Jimny demonstrated good leg and head protection for passengers, while the driver received adequate leg protection, marginal head protection, and weak chest protection. However, the vehicle's body structure was deemed unstable and unable to withstand further loadings, which is an area of concern.

In terms of additional safety equipment, the Jimny includes seatbelt reminders for both front and rear seats, a lane assist system, and an autonomous emergency braking system that operates at low speeds. However, it is worth mentioning that it lacks certain advanced safety features found in some of its competitors, such as a blind spot monitoring system or a lane-keeping assist system.
