Introduction

The most affordable compact SUV in its class is here, and bookings are open at ₹11,001 until October 31st!

Variants and Colors

The Basalt is offered in five monotone colors: Polar White, Steel Grey, Platinum Grey, Cosmo Blue, and Garnet Red, with optional black roofs for the white and red variants.

Engine and Performance

The Basalt offers two 1.2-litre petrol engines: an 82hp naturally aspirated unit with a 5-speed manual and a 110hp turbo-petrol with options for a 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox. Fuel efficiency is claimed at 18 km/l for the naturally aspirated engine, 19.5 km/l for the turbo-petrol manual, and 18.7 km/l for the automatic.

Exterior Design

The Basalt retains its original design sketches, featuring a matte plastic finish on body cladding and resembling the C3 Aircross SUV. Its front fascia includes a chrome-lined Chevron logo, a two-part grille, and projector headlamps, marking a first for a C-Cubed model in India.

The profile boasts squared-off wheel arch cladding, a pinched window line, 17-inch alloy wheels, and a sleek roofline. The rear showcases a contoured tailgate, halogen tail lamps with a 3D effect, and a dual-tone bumper.

Interior

Inside, the Basalt shares the C3 Aircross dashboard with upgrades like digital HVAC controls, a larger front armrest, and adjustable rear thigh support. The boot holds up to 470 liters, with roof-mounted rear AC vents.

Features

High-spec variants include a 10.25-inch touchscreen, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 15W wireless smartphone charger. Citroen's C-Cubed motifs are present on the AC vents and steering wheel.

Safety

Standard safety features include six airbags, an electronic stability program (ESP), hill-hold assist, and a tire pressure monitoring system.

Dimensions

The Basalt is positioned within the midsize SUV segment, offering spacious interiors and a sleek design.

  • Length: 4,352 mm long
  • Width: 1,765 mm
  • Height: 1,593 mm
  • Ground Clearance: 180 mm

Rivals

It will directly compete with the Tata Curvv ICE. Apart from that few of the existing rivals are Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and Honda Elevate.

Citroen Basalt Insight Review

thumb-upWhat We Like?

  • Bold SUV Coupe styling.
  • Plenty of room and storage.
  • 1.2L turbo-petrol is fun to drive.
  • Well-tuned suspension for comfort.
  • 470L space for luggage.

thumb-downWhat could have been better?

  • Coupe styling isn’t for everyone.
  • No sunroof, ventilated seats, or cruise control.
  • Petrol-only, no hybrid or EV.
  • Cost-cutting evident in materials.
  • Rearward visibility is limited.

Exterior Design and Build

The Citroen Basalt stands out with its distinct coupe-like design, which sets it apart from its SUV sibling, the C3 Aircross. Its sloping roofline and pronounced wheel arches give it a more dynamic and emotive presence on the road.

Although it is narrower, lower, and sits on a shorter wheelbase than the Aircross, the Basalt still manages to make a bold statement. The lowered ground clearance adds to its sporty appeal, while the carefully reworked chassis structure with ultra-high-strength steel around critical areas aims to achieve a 5-star BNCAP safety rating.

However, despite its aesthetic appeal, it lacks certain features like a rear wiper that would have added practicality to its design.

Engine and Performance

Under the hood, the Citroen Basalt is powered by a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox.

This powertrain is familiar from the C3 Aircross and continues to impress with its good drivability, smoothness, and effortlessness, particularly in the low and mid-range. The throttle response is alert yet linear, providing a balanced driving experience.

The engine, though generally quiet, can be a bit jerky when shifting from first to second gear. It might not be the most thrilling engine to push to its limits, but it is more than capable of handling overtakes and maintaining cruising speeds on highways.

However, the steering feels vague and lacks precision, which detracts from the overall driving experience.

Interior and FeaturesInterior and Features

The interior of the Citroen Basalt has seen some improvements over its predecessors, addressing previous shortcomings.

The top-spec variant now includes powered ORVMs, wireless charging, digital climate control, and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Rear power window switches have also been moved to the doors, enhancing convenience.

The Basalt offers an adjustable front central armrest and rear seats with three-step adjustable thigh support in the automatic version. However, it still lacks some key features like a sunroof, keyless entry and start, and a rear wiper.

The quality of materials inside the cabin is inconsistent, with some areas featuring rich gloss black plastic, while others are finished in cheaper-looking matte plastic. The fit and finish of the plastic panels also vary, which might not meet the expectations of buyers in this segment.

Safety and Comfort

Citroen has made significant strides in safety with the Basalt. It comes standard with six airbags, ESP, hill hold, TPMS, and ISOFIX seats. The reworked chassis structure aims for a top-tier BNCAP safety rating, reinforcing its focus on safety.

In terms of comfort, the Basalt excels with its spacious cabin, comfortable seats, and thoughtful features like a height-adjustable driver’s seat and an adjustable steering column. The ride quality is particularly impressive, with the softer suspension setup providing a smooth and composed ride over rough roads.

However, taller passengers might find the rear headroom a bit tight due to the sloping roofline.

Ride and Handling

The Citroen Basalt offers a comfortable and composed ride, especially over rough or undulating roads, thanks to its softer suspension setup. It maintains stability in a straight line and dismisses bumps and potholes with ease.

However, the Basalt is not a sharp handler. It tends to roll in corners and does not feel particularly agile in quick direction changes. The steering, while having a fine rack ratio, lacks response and feedback, making it feel vague, especially off-center.

This might be a drawback for those who prioritize engaging driving dynamics. On the plus side, the elevated seating position and good visibility up front make it an easy car to drive, although the rearward visibility is compromised by the narrow rear windscreen and low-resolution reversing camera.

Overall its a good car

It feels like a good value for money. It offers a stylish design, a comfortable interior, and reliable performance without feeling overly expensive. While it might not be the cheapest option in its segment, the features and quality it delivers make it worth the investment. It’s a car that feels premium without breaking the bank.

It's for everyday use

It’s not sporty but for everyday use or occasional trips. Additionally, the safety of the Basalt is uncertain, as it has not been tested in the BNCAP.
