Kia tests Carens Electric in India, expanding the country's EV market. Spy shots reveal potential features and specifications of the 2025 model.
Kia is set to launch an all-electric variant of its popular Carens MPV, as confirmed by recent spy shots. The Carens EV, slated for launch in the first half of next year, will feature distinct styling elements while sharing its platform and powertrain with the upcoming Creta EV. The Carens Electric will compete with the BYD eMax 7 in the emerging electric MPV segment, expanding Kia's electrified line-up.
The Carens EV will maintain the body shell and most interior elements of its combustion-engine counterpart. However, spy images reveal notable exterior changes, particularly at the front. The electric variant is expected to sport a closed-off grille reminiscent of the Kia EV9, the brand's flagship electric SUV launching on October 3. There is no visible rear electric motor in the spy shots.
The spy images of the 2025 Kia Carens Electric provide insights into its potential features and specifications:
Powertrain details for the Carens EV align closely with the forthcoming Creta EV. Both models are anticipated to utilize a 45kWh battery pack, powering a front-mounted electric motor. This motor is likely shared with the entry-level version of the new-generation Kona EV available in international markets.
The Kia Carens EV is anticipated to offer both 6-seater and 7-seater configurations, enhancing its versatility. In terms of competition, the upcoming BYD eMax 7 appears to be its primary rival, considering its size and seating layout.
The introduction of the Carens EV is part of Kia's broader strategy to expand its electric vehicle portfolio. Prior to its launch, the company plans to unveil several new products:
The entry of Kia into the electric MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) space demonstrates the expanding interest of manufacturers in India's EV market. As more automakers invest in electric vehicle development, consumers can expect a wider range of options in the coming years.
While the exact launch date and pricing details for the Kia Carens Electric are yet to be announced, its testing phase suggests that the vehicle could hit Indian roads by 2025. As the automotive industry continues its shift towards electrification, the Carens EV represents Kia's commitment to offering diverse and sustainable mobility solutions to Indian consumers.
