BMW has discontinued the 6 Series GT in India, and replaced it with the new long-wheelbase 5 Series, reflecting changing customer preferences.
BMW has announced the discontinuation of the 6 Series GT in India. This decision comes shortly after the launch of the new 5 Series, which will now serve as a replacement for both the outgoing 5 Series and the 6 Series GT. The 6 Series GT was quite popular, securing its place as the second highest-selling sedan in the fiscal year 2024, just behind the Mercedes E-Class.
The introduction of the new 5 Series in its long wheelbase (LWB) version was a strategic move by BMW. The success of the 6 Series GT was a key factor in BMW's decision to bring the new 5 Series to India in a longer format. This new model is expected to cater to the same customer base that favored the 6 Series GT.
In the fiscal year 2024, the 6 Series GT sold 1,428 units. This was significantly higher than the previous-generation 5 Series, which sold 1,059 units in the same period. The 6 Series GT even surpassed some popular SUVs, including the BMW X3, Land Rover Defender, and Audi Q5. This impressive performance highlights the popularity of the long wheelbase format among Indian buyers, particularly those who prefer extra space and comfort.
The 6 Series GT was available with a choice of a 258hp, 2.0-litre petrol engine or a 190hp, 2.0-litre diesel engine. However, the new 5 Series, which is replacing the 6 Series GT, currently offers only a 2.0-litre petrol engine. BMW plans to introduce a diesel variant of the new 5 Series later on to cater to all customer preferences. Additionally, the high-performance M5 variant with a 727hp, plug-in hybrid V8 engine is expected to be introduced in India soon.
With the discontinuation of the 6 Series GT, BMW’s sedan lineup in India now includes the 2 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series. The 5 Series and 7 Series are also available in electric versions, alongside the i4 sedan.
While the 6 Series GT has made its exit, the new 5 Series is set to continue the legacy of luxury and performance that the 6 Series GT once offered. BMW’s move reflects its strategy to streamline its lineup and cater to evolving customer preferences in the Indian market.
