BMW Motorrad India has quietly pulled the plug on its most affordable bikes, the G 310 R and G 310 GS, marking a major strategic shift.

In a quiet but significant shift in its India strategy, BMW Motorrad has officially discontinued the G 310 R and G 310 GS, the brand’s most affordable motorcycles in the country. Though there has been no formal announcement from BMW Motorrad India, the move has been confirmed by multiple dealerships and substantiated by the removal of both models from the company’s official Indian website.

The move effectively marks the end of an era for BMW’s made-in-India entry-level motorcycles that were built in collaboration with TVS Motor Company. It also reshapes the brand’s entry point, leaving the G 310 RR, a fully faired sportbike based on the TVS Apache RR 310, as the most accessible BMW motorcycle in India and globally.

From a Bold Entry to a Quiet Exit

BMW Discontinues G 310 R and G 310 GS in India: A Strategic Shift Toward Premium Adventure Bikes

The BMW G 310 R and G 310 GS were first introduced globally in 2015 and launched in India in 2018, after a long wait that built anticipation among enthusiasts. The roadster G 310 R and the adventure-focused G 310 GS were pivotal in BMW Motorrad’s strategy to tap into the growing 300–500 cc premium motorcycle segment, a space already competitive with models like the KTM 390 Duke, Honda CB300R, and Royal Enfield Himalayan.

Despite the strong BMW badge and solid engineering credentials, the G 310 twins never truly captured the Indian market’s imagination. Pricing, perceived value, and strong alternatives from rival brands impacted sales, which remained modest over the years. With the advent of stricter OBD-2B emission norms, BMW opted not to upgrade the twins to meet the new regulations, effectively pulling the plug on both models.

Global Continuity, Local Shift

Interestingly, while the G 310 R and G 310 GS are no longer available in India, they continue to be listed on BMW Motorrad’s global websites. This suggests that the models will remain on sale in international markets until local regulations catch up or inventory runs out. Given the global reach of the TVS-BMW manufacturing partnership, the shift could also be part of a broader realignment to make way for new offerings.

What Comes Next

BMW has hinted at a new platform to succeed the G 310 lineup, and we saw an exciting glimpse of that future with the F 450 GS Concept, showcased at EICMA 2024 and the 2025 Bharat Mobility Global Expo. The upcoming adventure motorcycle will feature a twin-cylinder engine, offering a significant leap in performance and capability, bringing it closer in spirit and styling to BMW’s flagship R 1300 GS.

Crucially, the F 450 GS will continue the successful BMW-TVS manufacturing collaboration, with the motorcycle expected to be built in India for both domestic and global markets. Production is set to commence later this year. Unlike the G 310 RR, however, the F 450 GS won’t spawn a TVS equivalent, signifying a premium standalone strategy for BMW going forward.

That said, TVS is reportedly working on its own 300 cc adventure motorcycle, likely sharing no mechanical relation to the BMW platform. This product is expected to debut by the end of 2025 and may offer a more affordable entry point for ADV enthusiasts.

Powertrain and Performance

The now-discontinued G 310 R and G 310 GS were powered by a 313 cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine, producing 34 bhp at 9,500 rpm and 28 Nm of torque at 7,500 rpm, mated to a 6-speed gearbox. While both shared core hardware, USD front forks, a rear monoshock, and disc brakes with dual-channel ABS, the GS variant featured longer suspension travel and off-road capability.

Though technically competent and aesthetically appealing, the twins couldn’t match the aggression of KTM or the heritage appeal of Royal Enfield in the same price bracket. BMW’s decision to sunset them may stem from a need to focus on more promising future platforms.

Final Thoughts

The discontinuation of the BMW G 310 R and G 310 GS is more than just the end of two motorcycles; it’s a strategic pivot. As the Indian motorcycle market matures and consumer expectations evolve, BMW seems ready to leave behind its entry-level roots in favour of a new premium trajectory. With the F 450 GS on the horizon and new models in the pipeline, the German marque appears poised for a more focused assault on the mid-capacity adventure and touring space.

For now, the G 310 RR carries the torch as BMW’s most affordable offering, but all eyes will be on what comes next from the BMW-TVS stable.
