Diesel vehicle sales see a rare rise in 2024, reaching 18% market share as SUVs dominate India's car market. Learn how SUV demand is reviving diesel engines amid modern alternatives.
The share of diesel in India's passenger vehicle (PV) market has seen a rare uptick in 2024, driven largely by surging demand for SUVs. According to data from Jato Dynamics, a market research and analytics firm, the share of diesel vehicles in total PV sales reached 18% as of the first half of December 2024, marking an increase from 17.8% in 2023. Diesel vehicle sales climbed to 774,000 units, compared to 738,000 units during the same period last year.
Roaring SUV sales remain the primary driver of diesel's revival. SUVs now account for a dominant 55% share of India's total car sales, up from 48.4% in 2023.
Interestingly, nine out of ten diesel-powered passenger vehicles sold this year have been SUVs. This surge has contributed to diesel capturing a higher market share for only the second time in 13 years, during a period when the fuel has faced mounting competition from petrol, CNG, and electric alternatives.
Ravi Bhatia, President of Jato Dynamics, highlighted the evolving role of diesel engines within the auto market. "What we're seeing is diesel's evolution into a specialised solution, not its decline. The technology particularly suits mid- to high-end SUVs, where its low-end torque proves ideal," Bhatia said.
As diesel struggles in entry-level segments due to the increasing affordability and efficiency of petrol and CNG, it has found a clear niche in premium SUVs and luxury vehicles. Mid to high-end SUV buyers continue to prefer diesel powertrains due to their higher fuel efficiency and superior torque delivery, especially for long-distance driving.
The improvements in diesel technology also play a role. Modern diesel engines feature advanced emission control systems, providing better refinement, lower emissions, and improved environmental compliance. Though diesel engines are costlier due to additional technology requirements, their viability remains strong in the premium market where buyers can absorb the added costs.
The renewed demand for diesel has caught the attention of automakers. Skoda Auto India confirmed plans to reintroduce diesel options in its lineup. “We will first showcase it and seek feedback. Diesel accounts for over 35% of more than 70,000 Octavias currently on the road. The same applies to the Superb as well,” said Petr Janeba, Brand Director at Skoda Auto India. He further emphasized diesel’s relevance, particularly for premium models such as the Skoda Kodiaq, where diesel remains a preferred solution.
While diesel vehicles are often criticized for their nitrogen oxide emissions, modern advancements in diesel technology have made engines cleaner and more efficient. In fact, diesel outperforms petrol in CO2 emissions, strengthening its case in markets focused on environmental targets.
India’s unshakable love for SUVs has bolstered diesel demand. SUVs, by design, often benefit from the robust torque delivery of diesel engines, enhancing their performance and practicality. This year, SUVs captured an overwhelming 55% of total PV sales, significantly higher than the 48.4% share recorded in 2023.
For Mahindra & Mahindra, India’s top utility vehicle manufacturer, diesel sales remain indispensable. Diesel's share in Mahindra's PV portfolio rose to 83.4% in 2024, compared to 81.1% in the previous year. Similarly, in the luxury market, BMW India reported a substantial increase in diesel vehicle sales, with its share rising to 36%, up from 22.8% in 2023.
The shift toward mid- to high-end vehicles, better road infrastructure, and longer travel distances across the country have also contributed to diesel’s continued preference among SUV and premium car buyers.
While the push toward electrification is strong, diesel continues to hold its own. The increasing presence of diesel engines in premium and luxury SUVs underscores the segment's growing niche appeal. Diesel remains particularly viable for heavy vehicles and customers demanding long-range capabilities, an area where electric powertrains are yet to fully compete.
However, automakers must balance diesel’s short-term resurgence with long-term regulatory hurdles and electrification goals. As stricter emissions norms take effect and alternatives such as hybrids, CNG, and EVs continue to grow, diesel may remain a dominant force only in select high-value segments.
The resurgence of diesel sales in 2024 reflects not a blanket revival but a redefined role for diesel in India's evolving passenger vehicle market. As SUVs continue to dominate car sales, mid to high-end diesel powertrains will remain popular, benefiting from the fuel’s strengths being high torque, efficiency, and long-distance suitability.
India’s diesel market has once again proven its resilience, standing tall amid rapid electrification and alternative fuel competition. While its overall market share remains a shadow of its peak years, diesel’s share increase in 2024 is a clear indication that the fuel’s story isn’t over, it’s simply taking a different route.
