Ford trademarks Mustang Mach-E in India, hinting at potential re-entry; CBU import, competitive pricing, and strong EV market prospects.
In a surprising move that hints at a potential re-entry into the Indian market, Ford has recently trademarked the Mustang Mach-E in India. This development follows the cancellation of the Chennai plant sale deal with JSW, the filing of a patent for the Endeavour SUV, and the posting of job openings online. Ford, however, remains tight-lipped about officially confirming or denying its plans to re-enter the Indian automotive space.

The trademark filing for the Mustang Mach-E, a compact crossover electric SUV, serves as a robust indication of Ford's potential return to India. If launched, it is expected to be imported as a Completely Built-Up (CBU) unit, aligning with Ford's previous statements during its exit from the Indian market.
Imported as a CBU, the Mustang Mach-E will closely resemble the international models sold across various markets. Assembly for this crossover electric SUV currently takes place in Mexico and China. However, there's a possibility that Ford might consider the Completely Knocked Down (CKD) route in the future to achieve a competitive price point in India, similar to its global competitors.
With an estimated starting price of around Rs 70 lakh for the CBU import, the Mustang Mach-E will compete with other electric SUVs in the Indian market, including the Kia EV6, Volvo XC40 Recharge, BMW i4, and BMW iX1. While the Indian EV market shows immense potential, Ford's consideration of local manufacturing could play a pivotal role in the company's future strategy.
Ford's earlier exit from India was part of a global business restructuring plan, as the company faced challenges in achieving expected sales volumes and targeted returns on investment. The cautious approach towards re-entry suggests that Ford aims to avoid a repetition of past setbacks in the Indian market.
In the United States, the Mustang Mach-E is available in four variants, offering both Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (eAWD) configurations, as well as standard and extended-range options. The base variant features a 70 kWh usable battery capacity, producing 266 hp and 430 Nm of torque for the RWD variant and 580 Nm for the eAWD variant.
The EPA-estimated range varies from 224 miles to 314 miles, depending on the variant. The top-spec Mustang Mach-E GT variant, priced at approximately Rs 49.86 lakh, boasts a powerful 480 hp and 813 Nm of torque. With an extended range of 270 miles, it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds.
