At the epicenter of this new system, Hyundai Motor has revamped the hybrid transmission, which now features two built-in electric motors, P1 and P2.
At Next Gen Hybrid System Tech Day, Hyundai Motor Group unveiled its new-generation hybrid powertrain system, featuring critical mechanical and software enhancements to equip its existing and upcoming hybrid vehicles. It's a major update from the automaker, as it plans to explore hybrid technology as a transitional option while global markets shift towards electric options.
At the epicenter of this new system, Hyundai Motor has revamped the hybrid transmission, which now features two built-in electric motors, P1 and P2. The P1 motor handles the start-up, energy recovery, and power assistance, while the P2 takes charge of propulsion and regeneration. This major upgrade offers better fuel economy, reduced emissions, and quicker gear shifts during driving.
This technology also assists in integrating various internal combustion engines, providing the flexibility to offer hybrid options across a range of sub-compact to large SUVs. This system is claimed to offer power delivery between 99 bhp to 296 bhp. The system will be configured with 2.5-liter and 1.6-liter turbocharged hybrid engines in the initial stages. The 2.5-liter engine will churn up to 329 bhp and 460 Nm of torque, while the 1.6-liter turbo engine will produce 380 Nm.
Earlier this month, Kia, a subsidiary of Hyundai, announced that the next-generation Kia Seltos will feature a hybrid transmission. The sub-compact SUV is also expected to feature a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine, which will likely be offered in Hyundai Creta hybrid models.
Borrowing some features from its European counterparts, Hyundai's latest hybrid system will have several key features, including vehicle-to-load (V2L) charging, smart regenerative braking, and stay mode. That stay mode enables occupants to access cabin features without starting the engine, making it helpful when the vehicle is parked. The V2L offers 3.6 kW of continuous power output to charge devices outside the car.
The Korean automobile manufacturer has also provided safety features like e-Handling 2.0 and electrification evasive handling assist (e-EHA 2.0). This newly unveiled hybrid system is confirmed to be offered in a range of brand vehicles, including premium models under the brand Genesis, by 2026.
