Jaguar Land Rover's compact electric SUV, rumoured to be the "Baby Defender", has been spotted testing. Expected to launch in 2027.
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has temporarily halted deliveries to the United States due to recent import tariffs, which could affect the timing and rollout of upcoming models. One such model is the new Defender variant, which has recently been spotted undergoing testing. While excitement surrounds the vehicle, its future seems to tread a careful path, especially in light of JLR’s disrupted global plans.
According to sources, the spied model is slated for launch in 2027. Visibly smaller than the current-generation Defender, this new SUV is rumoured to be available in an all-electric variant. Despite its compact size, the model retains signature Defender design elements such as wide hips when viewed from the rear, flared fenders, an upright tailgate, and a long, flat roofline. However, the vehicle is expected to introduce fresh design cues and new features that are still under wraps.
These developments lend further credibility to longstanding rumours about the so-called “Baby Defender”, a smaller electric off-roader that JLR first teased back in 2023. The model appears to be part of JLR’s strategy to diversify the Defender family with a more compact and urban-friendly version.
Early speculation suggests that the new Defender could measure approximately 180 inches in length, making it similar in size to the current two-door Defender 90. However, it would be notably smaller than the four-door Defender 110, positioning it as a more agile and compact alternative within the lineup.
While JLR has not officially named the vehicle, there’s widespread speculation regarding its branding. If the company continues to follow its wheelbase-based naming convention, the model could be called the “Defender 80”. Another possible name floating around is “Defender Sport”, emphasising its lifestyle-orientated appeal.
The compact Defender is expected to directly compete with Mercedes-Benz’s upcoming “baby” G-Class, which the German automaker confirmed earlier this year. With both brands targeting the luxury compact off-road EV segment, a fierce rivalry is likely to emerge.
