Key Highlights
Bengaluru-based electric scooter start-up, River, has announced the reopening of bookings for its inaugural product, the Indie. Prospective customers now have the opportunity to secure their Indie by making an online payment of Rs 2,500.
Additionally, River has introduced an on-site booking option at its newly opened showroom in Bengaluru. Apart from its showroom, River Indie can be availed in cities Chennai, Kochi, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Surat, Delhi (NCR) and Kolkata.
Founded in 2021, River Electric Scooters garnered fresh funding in the previous year, led by the Al Futtiam Group, along with significant contributions from other investors. The company successfully launched the River Indie in February 2023, with the first units rolling off the manufacturing facility in Hoskote in August 2023.
Bookings for the initial batch of Indie scooters opened a month later, accumulating over 200 orders by the end of the month. The first set of scooters was subsequently delivered in October 2023 to customers in Bengaluru. After this, River was selling its scooter till the end of November. In January the e-scooter manufacturer set up their first flagship store in Bengaluru. However, the manufacturer has aimed to expand the River stores in 100 cities by 2026.
The River Indie boasts a powerful 6.7kW motor, accelerating from 0 to 40 kmph in just 3.9 seconds, and achieving a top speed of 90 kph. The scooter claims an impressive range of 120 km, with multiple ride modes for riders to choose from.
Charging options include an 800-watt portable charger and an upcoming fast charger. During test rides, the plush suspension and 14-inch wheels demonstrated their suitability for the varied and often challenging Indian road conditions.
The Indie, known for its sleek design and efficient performance, comes with an impressive 55 litres of storage space – 43 litres under the seat compared to 42 litre storage before any update and an additional 12 litres in the glove box. For riders looking for extra customization, the scooter offers accessories like panniers, a top box, and a floor cage.
Along with this, customers can avail the scooter in three different colour options namely, Summer Red, Monsoon Blue, and Spring Yellow.
Priced at Rs 1.38 lakh (ex-showroom, Bengaluru), the Indie has experienced a slight increase of Rs 13,000 since its initial launch. The competitive landscape for the Indie includes rivals such as the Ather 450S, TVS iQube S, and Bajaj Chetak Premium. Despite the price adjustment, the Indie positions itself as a compelling choice in the electric scooter market, offering a blend of performance, style, and practicality.
With the reopening of bookings and the enhanced features, River Electric Scooters aims to attract a wider audience and consolidate its presence in the growing electric mobility sector in India. The Indie's unique combination of storage capacity, accessories, and robust performance sets it apart as a noteworthy contender in the evolving electric scooter market.
