Suzuki's first electric SUV, the e-Vitara, will come with a 10-year battery warranty globally. India's launch is soon to happen with two LFP battery options, up to a 428 km range, and an FWD powertrain.

Suzuki has revealed a significant update about its upcoming all-electric SUV, the e-Vitara, confirming that it will be offered with a 10-year battery warranty in global markets. This move positions Suzuki as one of the few mainstream automakers to go beyond the industry-standard 8-year warranty for EV batteries, reflecting increased confidence in the durability and reliability of its battery technology. However, it remains unclear whether Maruti Suzuki will extend the same 10-year warranty to Indian buyers, where EV adoption is gradually accelerating.

Global Debut with Dual Battery Pack Options

The Suzuki e-Vitara, which was officially unveiled last year as the brand’s first all-electric SUV, will be sold globally with two battery pack options. Customers can choose between a 49 kWh and a 61 kWh pack, both using lithium-ferro-phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry. LFP batteries are known for their long life cycles, thermal stability, and cost-effectiveness, aligning well with Suzuki’s value-focused brand positioning.

Globally, the 49 kWh variant will be available exclusively in a front-wheel drive (FWD) configuration, powered by a single electric motor producing 142 bhp and 192.5 Nm of torque. This version is designed for everyday urban use and offers a WLTP-certified range of up to 346 km, making it ideal for city commuters.

The more powerful 61 kWh pack, on the other hand, offers two configurations. The FWD version comes with a bump in performance, delivering 172 bhp, while the all-wheel drive (AWD) variant steps it up to 181 bhp and 300 Nm of torque. In terms of range, the 61 kWh FWD variant can deliver up to 428 km, while the AWD version is rated for 412 km, offering a well-balanced combination of range and traction for varied road conditions.

For the Indian market, both the 49 kWh and 61 kWh battery pack options are expected to be made available. However, the AWD variant may not make it to Indian showrooms, possibly due to cost considerations and the relatively lower demand for all-wheel drive EVs in the country.

Interestingly, production of the e-Vitara for India and global markets will be handled at Maruti Suzuki’s plant in Gujarat, a key manufacturing hub for the company’s EV ambitions. This aligns with Maruti Suzuki’s broader strategy of using its Indian facilities to support global electric vehicle exports while also introducing competitively priced EVs for domestic buyers.

Warranty Competition Heating Up in India

While Suzuki’s 10-year battery warranty is a headline-grabbing move globally, Indian consumers are already being offered extended battery coverage by local rivals. Mahindra, for instance, has taken an aggressive stance by announcing a lifetime battery warranty for first owners of its BE.6 and XUV.e9 models. If Maruti Suzuki limits the e-Vitara’s battery warranty to the traditional 8 years in India, it could face pressure from competitors touting longer coverage as a key value proposition.

Launch Timeline and Expectations

The Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara is expected to launch in India in the coming months, marking the brand’s first serious foray into the electric vehicle segment. It will likely be positioned in the mid-size SUV category, going up against upcoming rivals from Tata, Hyundai, and Mahindra. With robust specifications, globally benchmarked range figures, and competitive warranty coverage overseas, the e-Vitara could play a pivotal role in Maruti Suzuki’s EV roadmap.

Whether it’s the long-range capabilities, LFP battery reliability, or the promise of global quality from a local plant, the e-Vitara is shaping up to be a compelling contender in India’s growing EV space. All eyes are now on Maruti Suzuki to see if it can match the global 10-year warranty in its home market and how aggressively it prices the vehicle to compete in a cost-sensitive segment.
