Tata Harrier & Safari Becomes First Models to be Tested By Bharat NCAP, Scores 5- Stars
  • Tata Harrier, Safari achieve 5-star Bharat NCAP ratings.

  • Advanced safety, competitive pricing.

  • Nitin Gadkari praises Tata Motors.

  • Tata vows ongoing safety improvements.

In a significant milestone for Indian automotive safety, Tata Motors' flagship SUVs, the Harrier and Safari, have achieved a remarkable 5-star rating in the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP). The announcement comes as the first batch of crash test results from the program, initiated by the Indian government on December 15, is unveiled.

What is Bharat NCAP?

Bharat NCAP is a star-rating system designed specifically for crash testing cars available in the Indian market. It is based on the Global NCAP crash test system and rates vehicles on a scale from zero to five, depending on their safety performance in crashes. The program aims to advance road safety and vehicle safety standards beyond mandatory regulations.

Global NCAP Parallels

The Bharat NCAP results closely mirror the Global NCAP ratings, with the Harrier and Safari having recently received a 5-star rating in Global NCAP’s crash tests. The similarities in scores for AOP and COP (Adult Occupant Protection and Child Occupant Protection) highlight the consistency of Tata Motors' commitment to safety across different testing protocols.

Understanding the Differences

While both Bharat NCAP and Global NCAP share common ground in crash test protocols, a notable difference lies in the maximum score achievable for AOP. Global NCAP allows a maximum of 34 points, whereas Bharat NCAP caps it at 32 points. Despite this distinction, the overall testing methodologies and rating assignments exhibit substantial similarities.

Tata's Commitment to Safety

Tata Motors has expressed pride in being the first automaker to secure a 5-star rating in Bharat NCAP. The Harrier and Safari, equipped with safety features such as seven airbags, Electronic Stability Control, three-point seatbelts in all rows, and ISOFIX child seat mounts, underlining the Tata's dedication to vehicle safety.

Both the Tata Harrier and Safari excelled in the crash tests, securing 30.08 out of 32 points for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and 44.54 out of 49 points for Child Occupant Protection (COP). These impressive scores contributed to the 5-star rating. Notably, the SUVs demonstrated excellent performance in the side movable deformable barrier test, though there was room for improvement in chest protection in the frontal offset deformable barrier test.

Government and Industry Collaboration

Nitin Gadkari

Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, emphasized the significance of Bharat NCAP as India’s independent voice on vehicle safety. He commended Tata Motors for achieving the highest 5-star rating, recognizing their ongoing efforts to introduce the safest vehicles on Indian roads.

Tata Motors' Safety Legacy

Shailesh Chandra, MD of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd, highlighted the company's commitment to safety. He noted that the Bharat-NCAP certification with a 5-star rating for the Harrier and Safari reflects Tata Motors' dedication to improving vehicle safety comprehensively.
