Tesla Launches New Model Y in China and Australia: Key Updates Explained

Code-named "Juniper," Tesla's much awaited Model Y facelift has made its official debut in China and Australia. Since its launch in 2019, Tesla's well-liked electric SUV has undergone its first significant update. The new Model Y, whose delivery schedules vary by area, is now accessible throughout Asia-Pacific, but sightings of prototypes suggested its availability.

Pricing and Launch Dates

Now the price has been increased compared to the previous version. In Australia, the base price for the new Model Y starts at 68,770 AUD ($42,596), up from 60,872 AUD. Deliveries begin in March for China and May for Australia, with regional variations.

Design and Exterior Changes

The new Model Y retains its familiar silhouette but incorporates significant design updates:

  • Front Design: Slim, connected light bars replace the traditional headlights, giving a futuristic look reminiscent of the Cybertruck.
  • Rear Design: The updated taillights are linked by a red light strip, similar to the new Model 3 design.
  • Additional Features: Turn indicators on the side mirrors and a front camera embedded in the bumper.
  • Wheels: Options vary by region. In China, buyers can select 19-inch "Interactive Storm" or 20-inch "Spiral Storm" wheels. Australia offers 20-inch "Helix 2.0" wheels.

New Color Options

Tesla offers five colors for the updated Model Y:

  • Pearl White Multi-Coat
  • Glacier Blue (new)
  • Stealth Grey
  • Quicksilver
  • Ultra Red

Glacier Blue replaces Deep Blue Metallic, offering a softer shade. Pricing for colors varies: Australian buyers get all colors included in the car’s base price, while Chinese buyers may pay up to 12,000 yuan for premium colors.

Interior Changes and Upgrades

While the overall cabin layout remains minimalistic, notable improvements enhance the experience:

  • Seating: The new Model Y is currently available only in a five-seat configuration.
  • Technology: A rear display is added, ambient lighting lines the interior, and the gear-shift stalk behind the steering wheel is removed.
  • Comfort: Ventilated seats and electric reclining rear seats add luxury. Acoustic glass improves cabin quietness.

Trims, Range, and Performance

Tesla offers two trims for the refreshed Model Y:

Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD)

Range: 466 km (WLTP, Australia)
Acceleration: 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds
Top Speed: 201 km/h
Price: Starts at 63,400 AUD ($39,275)

Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD)

Range: 551 km (WLTP, Australia)
Acceleration: 0-100 km/h in 4.3 seconds
Top Speed: 201 km/h

Performance improvements stem from efficiency optimizations rather than new batteries. The Performance model remains absent for now.

Availability in the U.S. and Europe

Tesla has not confirmed a release date for North America or Europe. Based on current launch timelines, the new Model Y may reach these markets in a few months.
