The Tesla Model Y facelift, codenamed Juniper, has been spotted testing on Indian roads for the first time, hinting at the EV giant’s imminent entry into the Indian market.

In a major development for India’s EV scene, the facelifted Tesla Model Y, codenamed Project Juniper, has been spotted testing on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, marking its first known appearance on Indian roads. This heavily camouflaged test mule hints at Tesla’s serious intent to finally enter the Indian automotive market after years of speculation and behind-the-scenes activity. Unveiled globally earlier this year, the updated Model Y features significant design and feature upgrades, aligning it more closely with Tesla’s futuristic design language seen on the Cybertruck.

The Model Y Facelift

While the test unit was draped in camouflage, sharp-eyed enthusiasts noted several exterior cues that align with the global facelifted version of the Model Y. Borrowing inspiration from the Cybertruck, the updated SUV gets a more angular design with split headlight units and full-width LED light bars both at the front and rear. These changes not only enhance the visual presence of the Model Y but also lend it a high-tech, premium aesthetic that mirrors Tesla’s next-gen design philosophy.

The Model Y’s Interiors

Inside, the cabin maintains Tesla’s trademark minimalist approach but with meaningful improvements. The highlight is a larger 15.4-inch central touchscreen, now sporting thinner bezels for a sleeker look. The facelift also introduces ventilated front seats, a new steering wheel design, and an additional 8.0-inch rear screen to enhance the experience for backseat passengers, possibly for climate control and entertainment. These updates make the Model Y more competitive against newer electric SUV rivals in terms of both comfort and tech.

Powertrains and Range

Globally, the Model Y is offered in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variants, with Tesla’s cutting-edge battery technology delivering WLTP-certified ranges of over 550 km, depending on the configuration. While Tesla has not revealed any India-specific battery specs or variants yet, the Model Y’s impressive range figures could prove to be a significant advantage in a market where charging infrastructure is still developing.

Tesla’s India Plans Finally Gathering Steam

The appearance of the facelifted Model Y test mule coincides with a flurry of activity on Tesla’s India front. The company has commenced hiring across multiple roles in India, signalling a serious ramp-up toward operational readiness. Initial showrooms are expected to open in Mumbai and Delhi, laying the foundation for a formal market entry. However, Tesla has yet to officially confirm which models will debut first in the Indian market.

With Tesla’s global lineup comprising the Model 3 and Model S sedans, the Model X SUV, and the Cybertruck, the Model Y’s testing on Indian roads could mean it is a strong contender for the brand’s launch portfolio. Given the growing appetite for premium electric SUVs in India, the Model Y, particularly in its facelifted form, could hit the sweet spot for Tesla’s target demographic.

Conclusion

The sighting of the Tesla Model Y facelift on Indian roads could be the clearest sign yet that the EV pioneer is nearing its long-awaited Indian debut. With refreshed styling, a tech-forward cabin, and a robust global powertrain lineup, the updated Model Y stands as a promising candidate for Tesla’s first official launch in the country. As Tesla begins hiring and prepping its initial showrooms, Indian EV enthusiasts may finally have a reason to believe the wait might soon be over.
