This period also showcased a variety of fuel preferences among consumers, reflecting the evolving market and the increasing adoption of alternative fuel types.
Despite some brands offering significant discounts of up to ₹1 lakh on their models, it didn't have a substantial impact. For instance, the Tata Punch received a modest discount of only ₹5,000, while Maruti models and the Nexon were offered discounts ranging from ₹60,000 to ₹1 lakh.
Additionally, the data highlights a diverse energy landscape, with petrol being the dominant fuel type for most top-selling cars. However, there is a noticeable shift towards alternative fuels such as CNG and electric, indicating changing consumer preferences and the increasing acceptance of greener options.

Leading the chart, the Tata Punch experienced a remarkable 64% increase in sales, with 1,10,308 units sold compared to 67,117 units in 2023. This SubCompact SUV's popularity has soared, making it the top performer this year.
This Sub Compact SUV leads in diversity, with 53% of units sold being petrol, 33% CNG, and 14% electric, showcasing its wide appeal across different fuel preferences.
Despite its popularity, the Maruti Wagon R saw a 9% decline in sales, dropping from 1,09,278 units in 2023 to 99,688 units in 2024. The hatchback remains a favorite but has faced stiff competition.
A popular hatchback, the Maruti Wagon R has a strong showing with 56% of its sales in petrol and 44% in CNG, indicating a balanced preference between the two fuel types.
Another popular hatchback, the Maruti Baleno, experienced a 6% decrease in sales, with 94,521 units sold in 2024 compared to 1,00,107 units in 2023.
The Maruti Baleno, another favourite hatchback, sees a dominant 87% of its sales in petrol and 13% in CNG, showing a strong inclination towards petrol.
The Maruti Dzire sedan saw a significant 30% increase in sales, with 93,811 units sold in 2024, up from 72,278 units in 2023, indicating a strong market presence.
This sedan has a nearly even split, with 48% of its sales in petrol and 52% in CNG, reflecting a versatile choice for consumers.
This Sub Compact SUV continued its upward trajectory with an 11% increase in sales, reaching 91,348 units in 2024, up from 82,566 units in 2023.
Among the Sub Compact SUVs, the Hyundai Creta stands out with 62% of its sales in petrol and 38% in diesel, indicating a significant preference for diesel among its buyers.
The Maruti Brezza also saw a positive change, with sales increasing by 10%, from 82,185 units in 2023 to 90,153 units in 2024.

The MUV segment was dominated by the Maruti Ertiga, which experienced a substantial 78% increase in sales, with 88,378 units sold in 2024 compared to 49,732 units in 2023.
This MUV has the highest CNG adoption, with 58% of its sales in CNG and 42% in petrol, highlighting its popularity as a CNG vehicle.
Matching the Tata Punch's growth, the Mahindra Scorpio saw a 64% increase in sales, with 85,326 units sold in 2024, up from 52,036 units in 2023.
Dominating the diesel segment, the Mahindra Scorpio has 92% of its sales in diesel, with only 8% in petrol, making it a predominantly diesel vehicle.
The Maruti Swift faced the steepest decline among the top ten, with sales dropping by 19%, from 1,04,465 units in 2023 to 84,172 units in 2024.

The primary reason for this decline is the absence of a facelift, but with the launch of the 2024 new-generation Swift, sales dynamics are expected to change.
In contrast, the Maruti Ertiga has shown tremendous growth, with a 78% increase in sales over the past six months. Notably, the sub-compact SUV Tata Punch leads the sales chart. Overall, the market shows a strong performance from SUVs, with five out of the top ten best-selling car models being SUVs. Furthermore, petrol remains the dominant fuel type compared to diesel, CNG, and electric.
