Volvo revamps EV nomenclature, renaming XC40 Recharge to EX40 and C40 Recharge to EC40 for enhanced clarity and sustainability focus.
In a strategic move towards simplifying its electric vehicle (EV) lineup, Volvo has officially renamed its XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge models. The XC40 Recharge is now known as the 'EX40,' while the C40 Recharge is rebranded as the 'EC40.' The decision to drop the 'Recharge' suffix aims to streamline Volvo's EV nomenclature and align it with the latest additions to the electric family, such as the EX30 and EM90.
The name change is part of Volvo's broader strategy to transition into a fully electric vehicle manufacturer by 2030. By ensuring consistency in model naming, Volvo aims to facilitate customer identification and distinguish between electric and hybrid models easily. The shift in nomenclature is anticipated to be reflected in the India-specific models shortly.
The updated naming convention brings the EX40 and EC40 closer to other fully electric vehicles in Volvo's lineup, such as the EX30, EX90, and EM90. The move is designed to differentiate the EX40 from its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterpart, the XC40. The simplification process extends to plug-in hybrid variants, which will now be denoted by the 'T6' or 'T8' suffix to indicate power output levels.
Despite the recent name changes, Volvo's decision contradicts its earlier plans, as reports from 2021 suggested a shift towards conventional names for new EVs. Former CEO Hakan Samuelsson had hinted at a more personalized naming approach, but the brand opted for maintaining its alphanumeric tradition to retain 'brand familiarity,' according to the current CEO, Jim Rowan.
Volvo currently offers two EVs in India – the EX40 and EC40. The company recently celebrated the local assembly of its 10,000th EX40. Looking ahead, Volvo is assured to introduce the flagship EX90 and the entry-level EX30 electric SUV to the Indian market, solidifying its commitment to sustainable mobility in the country.

Volvo's renaming of the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge to EX40 and EC40 reflects a strategic alignment with their latest EV models. The move enhances clarity for customers and reinforces Volvo's commitment to a fully electric future. The brand's ongoing EV journey in India includes plans for new models, reinforcing its sustainability goals.
