Bajaj Auto is launching the next-generation Chetak electric scooter on December 20, 2024, promising design upgrades, enhanced range, and a more budget-friendly variant. This iconic scooter will compete against TVS iQube and Ather Rizta.
Bajaj Auto, one of the largest auto manufacturers in India is launching a new generation model of its iconic Chetak electric scooter tomorrow, December 20. Chetak was a status symbol for Indian middle-class families and ruled the two-wheeler market for 33 years. However, the company first launched the Chetak scooter in 1972 which took no time to become a symbol. Then, its first electric version was launched in early 2020, and since then it has been a popular electric scooter among people in India. Today, we have overviewed the expectations from this next-gen Bajaj Chetak, launching tomorrow.
The all-new Bajaj Chetak, launching tomorrow is the most upgraded scooter of the Bajaj’s electric scooter lineup. It is highly anticipated that this time Chetak will retain its classic design retaining the top hat, sculpted body panels, round headlights, and bulbous rear profile with its characteristic curve. However, the taillights are expected to present a newly crafted shape for a fresh touch in the rear profile. Moreover, the scooter may see a redesigned chassis that positions the battery pack beneath the floorboard. This modification will lower the center of gravity of the scooter which enhances its stability and handling while keeping a larger under-seat storage capacity. This makes it a notable improvement over its predecessor.
Additionally, it is expected to maintain the existing TFT display for the instrument console that includes riding modes, turn-by-turn navigation, and call/SMS alerts, while potentially adding new features to compete with rivals such as smartphone connectivity, navigation, and other digital features.
According to the recent spy shots of test mules, this Chetak will feature a conventional key ignition system instead of the keyless entry used in previous models. This move suggests Bajaj has focused on simplicity and cost reduction as this is a popular budget-friendly and family-first scooter.
Moreover, some reports also indicate that Bajaj may introduce a more affordable version of the Chetak, which could include changes such as steel wheels, drum brakes, and a basic monochrome LCD instrument cluster instead of the advanced TFT display.
This budget-friendly variant is expected to have a maximum speed of around 65 km/h and a claimed range close to 100 km per charge. The pricing for the new Chetak is anticipated to be slightly higher than the current model, which ranges from ₹99,998 to ₹1,40,444 (ex-showroom Delhi).
Once launched, the updated Chetak will compete with established players in the electric scooter market such as Ather Rizta, TVS iQube, and Ola S1 Pro. In addition to this launch, Bajaj Auto is reportedly working on expanding its electric vehicle portfolio with plans for alternative fuel options like CBG (Compressed Bio Gas) and CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) scooters by 2025.
As expectations are building for tomorrow's launch event, Bajaj Auto is aiming to solidify its position in the list of strong players in the Indian electric mobility market with next-generation Chetak which is on the way to offer an affordable choice for a wider audience.
