Mahindra & Mahindra has officially announced the launch of its 5-door Thar in CY24. Though many reports confirmed the launch of the Mahindra 5-door Thar in CY23, an official statement by M&M's CEO for the Auto and Farm Sector, Rajesh Jerurikar, confirmed
Mahindra & Mahindra on Friday announced plans to launch its 5-door Mahindra Thar in India in the calendar year 2024. Multiple reports speculated that the launch of Mahindra Thar 5-door could happen in CY2023. However, keeping all rumors aside, the executive director and CEO of the Auto and Farm Sector at Mahindra, Rajesh Jejurikar, confirmed that the launch of the 5-door Thar would not happen in CY23. Instead, the company will unveil it in CY24.
Based on recent spy shots of the 5-door Thar during the road test, Mahindra can make some minor styling changes. Of course, the overall design and look will remain similar, as seen in the Mahindra Thar 3-door. However, there might be some tweaks in the interior and exterior to differentiate both models.
It's anticipated that the front profile can feature an all-new grille design. At the same time, the headlamps are more likely to remain the same. Looking at the side profile, the upcoming Mahindra Thar would be longer due to the larger wheelbase and the placement of additional doors. The SUV can have new-style alloy wheels reflecting an extended version of Thar. There would be no major changes except the tail light configuration for the rear profile.
Going inside the 5-door Mahindra Thar, it can carry a front dashboard from the 3-door Thar available in the Indian market. There could be minor modifications in terms of color shades, styles, and textures. In one of the test mules of the upcoming Mahindra Thar, it was spotted to have a big center armrest for front passengers.
The 5-door Thar can pack a proper bench to accommodate three adults. Customers can expect to have enough legroom and headroom in the second row. Further, the upcoming Thar would also offer more boot space than the 3-door Thar.
Mahindra can offer a 2.4-liter medallion turbo petrol engine and a 2.2-liter mHawk diesel engine in the upcoming 5-door Mahindra Thar. This powertrain is likely to be identical to existing variants of Mahindra Thar.
Though the powertrain would hardly change, the automaker may upgrade this engine configuration to produce higher power output and torque. Further, Mahindra can offer 6-speed manual and automatic gearbox options and 4x4 and 4x2 options in the all-new 5-door Mahindra Thar.
The upcoming 5-door Thar is expected to come with minor upgradation in features and powertrain but will carry some significant upgrades in its mechanicals to accommodate additional doors and rows to accommodate three more adult passengers.
Since it will be a larger version of existing models of Mahindra Thar, we may see a slight price hike from Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh compared to the base variant of the 3-door Mahindra Thar. So, the expected ex-showroom price of a Mahindra 5-door Thar SUV can range from Rs 13.50 lakh to Rs 19.50 lakh.
