Attention: 5000 Royal Enfield Himalayan Bikes Recalled Due to "Brake Malfunction"

The Royal Enfield Himalayan is a dual-sport motorcycle designed for adventure touring. It features a 411cc single-cylinder engine, long-travel suspension, and a rugged build. The bike is popular among adventure riders for its reliability and off-road capabilities.

The US has issued a recall for the Royal Enfield Himalayan due to "loss of braking function from caliper corrosion". In the US, about 5,000 machines are being recalled.

It's interesting to note that the Himalayan has already been recalled due to a similar problem. For the same problem in 2020, RE recalled more than 15,000 units of the 650 twins and the Himalayan. The recall is currently being carried out in the US, whereas it was previously carried out in the UK, Europe, and South Korea.

The brake calipers may deteriorate as a result of the salt used to treat roads in the winter, "causing a decline or total loss of brake operation," according to Royal Enfield's official letter with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). 4,891 Himalayan units produced between 2017 and 2021 may be impacted as a result.

Because of this, RE has launched a voluntary recall, during which time dealers will swap out the front and rear brake calipers on the impacted cars. The brake calipers for the Himalayan are supplied by ByBre (a Brembo subsidiary). Although the reason why vehicles produced after 2021 are unaffected is unclear, it is likely that the braking system has undergone some form of modification.

Although there has been no official statement from RE regarding whether any bikes sold in India have been impacted, the risk is limited because the use of road salt is not very common in India. No units in India were impacted by the prior recall in 2020, and we anticipate that this time will also be the case. At the time of publication, we have contacted Royal Enfield for an official statement on this issue and are awaiting a response.
