Sales of plug-in electric vehicles for passengers around the world are rising steadily and quickly approaching new highs. In August, about 847,580 new passenger plug-in electric cars were registered, which is 60% more than a year ago and not far from a record level (it's actually the best "off-peak" month since the peaks are typically in the last month of a quarter). This information was provided by Jose Pontes of EV-Volumes.
Market share rose to 15%, with around 11% of vehicles being battery-electric and 4% being plug-in hybrids. PHEVs increased by 47% while BEVs increased by 66%. However, the article claims that PHEV sales outside of China are down 9%.
Conventional hybrids are only up 6% year over year, though, after months of decline. Since March 2022, that growth rate is the greatest.
More than 5.7 million new plug-in electric automobiles for passengers have been registered globally so far this year, which creates the possibility of exceeding 10 million units in 2022. (for the very first time).
Plug-in car registrations year-to-date:
With 64,780 units sold, the Tesla Model Y stole the show in August (best off-peak result). However, BYD can also be content with five of the top 10 models (at least if we count BEVs and PHEVs together, as in the data source).
Top 10 Evs for the August 2022 month Globally:
The top-selling plug-in car model is still the Tesla Model Y, but the following three models (the BYD Song family, the Tesla Model 3, and the Wuling Hong Guang MINI EV) are now closely related to one another.
In the top 10, there are six BYD models, two Teslas, one Volkswagen, and one Wuling.
Over 173,000 plug-in electric cars, including 82,678 BEVs, were sold by BYD in August, setting a record that is substantially higher than Tesla's (101,778). In third place with almost 40,000 is Volkswagen.
Top 10 Brands for August 2022:
The SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture, Tesla, and BYD (which increases its competitive advantage) are the top three brands thus far this year.
