Tesla recalls 2 million cars in the USA and Canada due to Autopilot concerns, prompting an OTA update for improved safety measures.

Autopilot Alert: 2 Million Tesla's Recalled for Safety Upgrade & Ongoing Scrutiny
  • Tesla recalls 2 million vehicles in the USA and Canada for Autopilot issues.

  • Over-the-air update planned to address Autosteer concerns.

  • Tesla's second Autopilot-related recall in 2023.

  • Tesla defends Autopilot, citing improved safety metrics during use.

  • Critics argue Tesla's "Autopilot" name is misleading.

In a significant move, Tesla has recalled nearly 2 million vehicles in the USA and Canada due to concerns related to its Autopilot feature. The recall follows a comprehensive two-year investigation by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) into 956 crashes involving the Autopilot system.

The Recall Scope

The recall impacts all the Tesla models—Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y—that are equipped with the Autosteer feature, an integral part of Tesla's Autopilot suite available since 2012. Autosteer assists with lane-keeping and adaptive cruise control, and requires the drivers to maintain the hands-on control of the steering wheel.

Autosteer Fix via Over-the-Air Update

Tesla has outlined a fix for the affected vehicles that will be deployed through an over-the-air (OTA) software update. This phased update will address the concerns that are related to the drivers misuse of the Level 2 advanced driver-assistance feature. The fix includes more prominent visual alerts, simplified engagement/disengagement of Autosteer, additional checks during the use, and the potential suspension if the driver’s distraction is detected.

Second Autopilot Recall This Year

This marks the second significant recall by Tesla in 2023 related to its Autopilot feature. The earlier recall was due to the involvement of vehicles causing violations of traffic laws.

The Reason Behind the Recall

Tesla, in an official statement, acknowledged that under certain conditions when the Autosteer is engaged, the controls' prominence may not be sufficient to prevent the misuse by drivers. Despite not fully concurring with the (US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) NHTSA's analysis, Tesla is proactively implementing the corrective measures.

Tesla's Autopilot: Safety Metrics and Controversies

Tesla defended its Autopilot feature, stating that safety metrics are stronger when the Autopilot is engaged compared to when it’s not in use. However, critics argue that Tesla's use of the term "Autopilot" itself may mislead the users about the system's capabilities.

The NHTSA's investigation highlights instances where the Autopilot features did not meet the expectations set by its name. It points to numerous accidents suggesting that the system falls short of true autopilot functionality.

In a tweet (formerly known as X), Tesla reiterated its safety claims, citing crash data from the 4th quarter of 2022. The company stated that crashes occurred less frequently when the drivers used the Autopilot technology compared to those that were not using it.

As Tesla works to address the concerns of Autopilot, the company faces ongoing scrutiny regarding the safety and naming of its advanced driver-assistance features.

Verdict

Tesla's massive recall and commitment to an over-the-air fix underscore the company's proactive approach to enhancing Autopilot safety. Ongoing scrutiny remains pivotal.
