Bharat NCAP launches QR code labels for tested vehicles, offering comprehensive crash safety details to enhance consumer awareness and road safety.
Role of Bharat NCAP QR Code Labels
The importance of vehicle safety has become increasingly prominent in recent years, with more car buyers prioritizing crash safety ratings when purchasing a new vehicle. To further promote vehicular safety, the recently commissioned Bharat New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) has introduced a new initiative involving QR code labels that manufacturers can opt to display on their vehicles.
In a unique move, Bharat NCAP has launched QR code labels, or stickers, which can be affixed to vehicles that have undergone crash safety testing. These labels are designed to highlight the safety credentials of a vehicle, providing new car buyers with a clear indication of the vehicle's crash test results. The initiative aims to increase awareness of vehicular safety and encourage manufacturers to prioritize crash safety in their vehicle designs.
While vehicular safety is not a new concept, it has gained significant traction in recent years. More consumers are now aware of both active and passive safety measures that can protect them in the event of an accident. Institutions like Bharat NCAP and Global NCAP play a crucial role in this awareness by conducting comprehensive crash tests on vehicles and publishing the results. These tests assess how well a vehicle can protect its occupants in various crash scenarios.

The QR code labels introduced by Bharat NCAP are intended to provide detailed information about a vehicle's crash safety credentials. When scanned, the QR code directs users to the Bharat NCAP website, where they can access comprehensive details about the crash test procedure and the specific vehicle's performance. This feature allows potential buyers to make informed decisions when choosing a vehicle and even helps them select the safest variant of a model.
Manufacturers whose vehicles have been tested by Bharat NCAP can opt to display these labels. However, it is worth noting that the use of these labels is not mandatory. If a manufacturer chooses not to use the labels, the information about the vehicle's crash safety ratings will still be available on Bharat NCAP's official website and other online platforms.
There is some uncertainty regarding how these labels will be used in practice. For instance, it is not yet clear whether the stickers are meant to be permanent or temporary. Ideally, the labels would serve their purpose during the vehicle selection process, allowing buyers to see the crash safety ratings before making a purchase. Once the vehicle is bought, the need to display the crash safety rating daily may no longer be necessary.
As of now, only four vehicles have been tested by Bharat NCAP, and the results are available to the public. These vehicles include the Tata Harrier, Tata Safari, Nexon EV, and Punch EVO. The Harrier and Safari, which share the same platform, have received identical ratings, with all four vehicles earning an excellent 5-star rating for both adult and child safety. Bharat NCAP plans to test more vehicles in the future, with the results to be published accordingly.
The introduction of Bharat NCAP QR code labels represents a significant step towards promoting vehicle safety in India. By providing easy access to crash safety information, these labels empower consumers to make safer choices when purchasing a vehicle. As more vehicles undergo testing and more manufacturers adopt the labels, this initiative has the potential to greatly enhance road safety across the country.
