BMW's 5 Series LWB in India lacks the Theatre Screen but may include it later for enhanced rear-seat entertainment.
BMW launched the 5 Series Long Wheelbase (LWB) in India recently, but it came without the much-anticipated rear seat-based Theatre Screen. This feature, which promises to revolutionize rear-seat entertainment, is still under evaluation for the Indian market. Let's dive into what makes this feature special and why it wasn't included initially.
BMW first introduced the Theatre Screen in its 7 Series. This feature includes a massive 31.3-inch screen with 8K resolution, offering an unparalleled viewing experience for rear-seat passengers. The screen, which folds down electrically from the roof, brings high-quality video streaming on the move.
The Theatre Screen is built around an Android system, specifically the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). It supports various aspect ratios, including 16:9, 21:9, and 32:9, to suit different viewing preferences. Passengers can stream 4K Ultra HD content from popular apps like Amazon Prime, Netflix, and YouTube, or enjoy pre-downloaded content. The system can be paired with a Harman/Kardon audio system or an upgraded Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System.
Jean-Philippe Parain, Senior Vice President at BMW Group, explained that incorporating the Theatre Screen presented additional hurdles for local assembly. The primary focus was on getting the 5 Series LWB assembled in India without further complications. Hence, the panoramic display was not included in the initial launch.
Despite its absence in the current model, BMW has not abandoned the idea of introducing the Theatre Screen in India. According to Parain, the company is exploring ways to bring this feature to the market at a later stage. The Theatre Screen is already available in the long-wheelbase 5 Series in China, making it the second car globally to have this feature.
The Theatre Screen boasts an 8K resolution (8000x2000 pixels), ensuring crystal-clear visuals. This high-definition display enhances the viewing experience, whether for streaming videos or playing games.
Passengers can adjust the screen to different aspect ratios and move it forward or backward to set an ideal viewing distance. Additionally, the screen activates a set of dark blinds on the sides and rear windows, providing an immersive experience while still allowing a limited view of the road to prevent car sickness.
Introducing the Theatre Screen in the 5 Series LWB would likely attract significant attention from potential buyers. This feature could set the 5 Series apart from its competitors and offer a unique selling point in the luxury sedan market.
The addition of the Theatre Screen might also help offset some of the 5 Series LWB's current shortcomings, such as the lack of adjustable rear backrests. This feature would enhance the overall passenger experience, making the car more appealing to luxury car buyers.
While the BMW 5 Series LWB launched in India without the Theatre Screen, there is hope that this feature will be introduced in the future. The Theatre Screen's advanced technology and unmatched entertainment experience make it a desirable addition to the 5 Series LWB. As BMW continues to evaluate the possibility of bringing this feature to the Indian market, luxury car enthusiasts can look forward to an even more enhanced driving experience.
