BMW M defies downsizing, embraces V8, and inline-six engines, rejects smaller options. Actively exploring electric cars but faces track challenges.

BMW M Stays True to Its Roots: No Downsizing for High-Performance V8, V6 Engines
  • Commits to larger engines, rejects smaller options.
  • Working on pure electric cars, but track readiness in doubt.
  • BMW M stands strong on powerful engines amidst industry changes.

BMW M Defies Downsizing Trend

In a bold move, BMW's high-performance division, BMW M, has declared its unwavering commitment to larger engines, defying the prevailing industry trend of downsizing for improved efficiency. Despite the increasing pressure from stringent emission norms and the industry-wide shift towards smaller, more fuel-efficient powertrains, BMW M is determined to stick with its iconic V8 and inline-six engines.

No Plans for Three or Four-Cylinder Engines, Says BMW M Boss

The decision was unveiled by BMW M's top executive, Frank van Meel, in response to inquiries about the division's future engine strategies. Van Meel revealed that BMW M has no intention of following the lead of its arch-rival, Mercedes-AMG, which has embraced downsized engines, including three and four-cylinder options for its performance-oriented vehicles.

Strong Base Engine Takes Priority

In a recent interaction with reporters, van Meel emphasized the BMW M's commitment to maintaining a strong base engine, dismissing the idea of incorporating smaller combustion engines with larger batteries. He stated, "That’s not the way we see it because we want to have a strong base engine anyway. So, for us, going to smaller combustion engines in combination with bigger batteries would not be the right way. For us, the step will be to go purely electric right away. And do that in a proper way."

BMW M's Future: Pure Electric Cars on the Horizon

While BMW M is resolute about preserving its larger engines, the division is not oblivious to the rising demands for the electric vehicles (EVs). Van Meel acknowledged that BMW M is actively working on pure electric cars. However, he also clarified that these electric models are not expected to hit the market in the near future.

Electric Propulsion Technology Still Not Track-Ready, Says CEO

Despite the ongoing developments of the electric vehicles within BMW M, van Meel has expressed doubts about the readiness of the electric propulsion technology for the track-focused machines. He also highlighted the current limitations, stating, that "It has to do one or two laps of the Nurburgring Nordschleife at full speed, actually, then with the battery, if you go, let’s say over 250 kilometers per hour, you won’t get any much further anyway. So that’s currently the restriction."

Verdict

BMW M remains committed to its heritage of powerful, larger engines, signaling a distinctive approach in an industry increasingly inclined toward downsizing and electrification. While the future holds electric aspirations, the division stands firm on maintaining its renowned high-performance character.
