India's 2024 Budget waives customs duties on lithium-ion batteries, likely lowering electric vehicle prices and boosting market growth.

Budget 2024: Customs Duty Waiver on Lithium-Ion Batteries to Lower EV Prices

In a significant move, India's Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced in the 2024 Union Budget that customs duties on 25 essential earth minerals, including lithium, copper, and cobalt, will be completely waived. This decision is set to impact the electric vehicle (EV) sector positively by potentially reducing the cost of EVs in India.

Impact on EV Prices

Lithium-ion batteries, crucial for electric cars, have been a major factor driving up their prices in India. Most of these batteries are imported, adding to the cost. With the new waiver on customs duties for lithium-ion batteries, the cost of these batteries is expected to drop, which could lead to a decrease in the overall price of electric vehicles.

Recent Developments in Lithium Reserves

India made a significant discovery of lithium reserves in February 2023 in the Salal-Haimana area of Jammu and Kashmir, estimated at 5.9 million tonnes. Further reserves were found in Rajasthan in May 2023, believed to be even larger. Although the extraction and refining processes for lithium are complex and infrastructure is currently lacking, these discoveries could eventually help reduce India's reliance on imported lithium, contributing to lower EV prices in the future.

Current EV Market in India

India's EV market has seen substantial growth over the past few years, with a wide range of options now available. Tata Motors has been a major player in this space, offering a diverse lineup of EVs. Other automakers, including MG, Hyundai, Kia, Citroen, and Mahindra, have also contributed to the market with models like the Comet EV, ZS EV, Ioniq 5, EV6, and eC3.

Affordable Electric Vehicles

For those interested in budget-friendly electric vehicles, the MG Comet EV is one of the most affordable options, starting at Rs 6.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Other affordable EVs include the Tata Tiago EV, Tata Punch EV, and Tata Tigor EV.

This move by the government is expected to make electric vehicles more accessible and affordable for Indian consumers, marking a positive step towards a greener future.
