The car sales in June 2023 witnessed a mix of growth and decline among India's major automobile manufacturers. Maruti Suzuki experienced slight overall growth, Tata Motors showcased consistent progress, Honda Cars India faced a decline but showed positive momentum, and Hyundai Motor India achieved steady growth in both domestic and export sales.

Maruti Suzuki: Slight Growth in Domestic Sales, Decline in Exports

Maruti Suzuki, one of India's leading automobile manufacturers, experienced a 2 per cent growth in total sales (domestic + exports) for June 2023. The company sold 1,59,418 units, up from 1,55,857 units sold in the same period last year. While domestic sales showed positive growth, the export segment witnessed a year-on-year (YoY) and year-to-date (YTD) decline.

Maruti Suzuki's Domestic Passenger Vehicle Sales

Breaking down the sales further, Maruti Suzuki's domestic passenger vehicle sales reached 1,33,027 units in June 2023, indicating an 8.43 per cent increase compared to June 2022. However, a month-on-month (MoM) decline of 7.43 per cent compared to May 2023.

Segment-wise Performance

Within the passenger vehicle segment, the mini part, consisting of models like Alto and S-Presso, witnessed a marginal YoY de-growth with sales dropping to 14,054 units in June 2023. Similarly, the year-to-date (YTD) sales declined to 40,400 units in the FY 2023-24 period from 48,987 units in FY 2022-23.

In the compact segment, which includes models like Baleno, Celerio, DZire, Ignis, Swift, TourS, and WagonR, sales fell to 64,471 units in June 2023 from 77,746 units in June 2022. However, the YTD sales showed a slight improvement, with growth to 2,10,825 units in the FY 2023-24 period from 2,04,877 units in the same period last year.

Tata Motors: Consistent Sales Growth in June 2023

Tata Motors, on the other hand, continued to demonstrate sales growth in June 2023. The company reported sales of 47,235 units, representing a 4.51 per cent YoY growth. The month-on-month (MoM) growth stood at 2.95 per cent, with sales reaching 45,880 units. In the second quarter of 2023 (Q2 2023), Tata Motors achieved significant growth of 15.50 per cent quarter-on-quarter (QoQ).

Honda Cars India: Decline in Sales, But Positive Momentum

Honda Cars India faced a 35.15 per cent decline in sales in June 2023 compared to last year, with 5,080 units sold. However, on an MoM basis, the company witnessed a 9.01 per cent growth, indicating a positive momentum. Honda Cars India is preparing to launch its compact SUV, Elevate, which is expected to rejuvenate its product portfolio.

Hyundai Motor India: Steady Growth in Domestic Sales and Exports

Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) recorded a cumulative sales figure of 65,601 units in June 2023, representing a 5.21 per cent YoY growth. Domestic sales accounted for 50,001 units, a marginal increase of 2.04 per cent, while exports reached 15,600 units, showing a growth of 16.85 per cent compared to the same period last year. Hyundai's models like VERNA, CRETA, and TUCSON have gained leadership positions in their respective segments in the first half of CY 23, generating positive customer traction.
