Maruti Suzuki sold 1,79,791 units in total, including 1,38,704 units in the domestic market, against 1,37,952 units in the same month last year, showing a marginal growth of 0.5%.
In April 2025, the Indian automobile market saw mixed performance; where some brands noticed unprecedented sales growth, and some saw a major decline in their sales performance. Maruti Suzuki sales jumped 7%, reaching 1,79,791 units in total compared to 1,68,089 units in April 2024. While the combined sales growth was noticed, the domestic sales of Maruti Suzuki show a marginal rise. Let's explore how leading automobile manufacturers, including Tata, Mahindra, and Toyota, performed last month.
As highlighted previously, Maruti Suzuki was the number one brand in April for selling the highest number of cars in the Indian market. The automaker sold 1,79,791 units in total, including 1,38,704 units in the domestic market, against 1,37,952 units in the same month last year, showing a marginal growth of 0.5%. On the other hand, the automaker exported 27,911 units against 22,160 units in April 2024. The automaker saw a decline in sales of mini-segment cars, including Alto and S-Presso, which contributed 6,332 units in sales against 11,519 units last year for the same month.
However, the compact segment, which includes Baleno, Celerio, Swift, and WagonR, accounted for 61,591 units in sales, which was 56,953 units in April 2024. Maruti also saw a decline in Ciaz's sales, dropping from 867 units to 321 units, and Eeco van, from 12,060 units to 11,438 units. The sales of the utility vehicle segment models, including Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, and Jimny, reported 59,022 units against 56,553 units last year.
India's popular SUV brand, Mahindra, announced 28% domestic sales growth, with 52,330 units from 41,008 units in April 2024. Its overall sales, including exports, stood at 84,170 units, a 19% increase. Mahindra's April sales growth is driven by consistent demand for its flagship Scorpio N and Thar models, which outpaced several popular SUVs in terms of their sales in the domestic market.
Tata Motors saw a 6% decline in its domestic sales to a record 45,199 units, which was 47,883 in April 2024. The lack of fresh model launches impacted the sales performance of Tata; it's an area where Mahindra is gaining an advantage. However, the PV IB sales registered 333 units from 100 units in April 2024, showing 223% growth. The EV (IB+domestic) sales dropped to 5318 units from 6364 units last year for the same month.
Hyundai Motor India saw a decline of 5% with 60,774 unit sales, which dropped from 63,701 units last year. In India, Hyundai sold 44,374 units, while it exported 16,400 units in global markets, compared to 50,201 units in domestic and 13,500 units in export markets during April 2024. During the month, Hyundai also celebrated its 9 million cumulative sales milestone in India since its commencement of business in 1996.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor performed exceptionally last month with sales of 27,324 units, up from 20,494 units the previous year, to register 33% YoY growth. While Toyota sold 24,833 units in the domestic market, the automaker exported 2,491 units in global markets.
Kia India also maintained positive momentum, with sales of 23,623 from 19,968 units last year, showcasing an 18.3% YoY increase. Kia Sonet became the best-selling Kia car in April, with sales reaching 8,068 units, followed by Kia Seltos with 6,135 units.
JSW MG Motor India announced 23% sales growth for April 2025, dispatching 5,829 units compared to 4725 units last year. MG Windsor EV leads the sales in the electric vehicle segment for the seventh consecutive month since its launch. It showcases that Indian consumers trust this MG EV because of its performance, reliability, and features.
Honda Cars India saw a sharp decline in its overall sales in April 2025, recording total sales of 4871 units compared to 10,867 units in April 2024, to a decline of 55.18%. Honda sold 3360 units in the domestic market from 4351 units last year, witnessing a 22.78% decline. Its MoM sales also dropped by 53.51% in just one month, where it sold 7,228 units in March 2025.
