Carlos Tavares, hailed as one of the most transformative leaders in the global automotive industry, has exited Stellantis amidst a dramatic turn of events. Once celebrated as the architect behind Groupe PSA’s revival and the mastermind of the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) merger, his departure underscores the volatility and immense pressures at the pinnacle of the automotive world.
Tavares rose to prominence during his tenure at Groupe PSA, the maker of Peugeot and Citroën. Between 2009 and 2013, PSA was teetering on the brink of collapse, battered by the global economic slowdown. Tavares joined the company in 2014, and his laser-focused strategies pulled the French automaker out of despair.
One of his most notable achievements came in 2017 when PSA acquired Opel and Vauxhall from General Motors. The acquisition marked a turning point, transforming PSA into a stronger European player. However, Tavares was far from done. In 2021, he engineered the merger of PSA with FCA, culminating in the creation of Stellantis, the world’s fourth-largest automaker by volume.
Under his leadership, Stellantis became a powerhouse, managing an extensive portfolio of 14 brands, including Jeep, Ram, Dodge, Peugeot, Citroën, Maserati, and Alfa Romeo. His strategic foresight enabled the conglomerate to navigate a challenging transition toward electrification while maintaining financial discipline.
Despite these successes, 2024 marked the beginning of a downturn. Stellantis faced steep sales declines in North America, attributed to pricing miscalculations for key brands like Jeep, Ram, and Dodge. This setback was a stark contrast to the company's previous growth trajectory and put Tavares at odds with Stellantis’ leadership team.
The Board of Directors announced that a new CEO would take over by 2026, but Tavares’ exit came sooner than expected on December 1, 2024. While details remain unclear, reports suggest irreconcilable differences between Tavares and the Board.
His departure leaves Stellantis leaderless at a critical juncture, raising questions about its ability to navigate the challenges of electrification, geopolitical uncertainties, and fierce competition from Chinese automakers.
Tavares’ critics often pointed to his demanding leadership style, which reportedly created a high-pressure work environment. Yet, there is no denying his extraordinary ability to deliver results. His emphasis on efficiency and focus was evident even during his earlier tenure as Chief Operating Officer at Renault, where he championed a “core model strategy” to streamline resources and bolster competitiveness.
While at PSA, Tavares displayed remarkable strategic acumen, not only steering the company to profitability but also laying the groundwork for long-term resilience. His decision to acquire a stake in Leapmotor, a Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, exemplified his forward-thinking approach as he sought to position Stellantis as a global EV leader.
However, his tenure also serves as a cautionary tale. His departure echoes the fates of other industry titans like Carlos Ghosn of Renault-Nissan and Sergio Marchionne of FCA, who also grappled with the immense challenges of leading sprawling automotive empires.
The global automotive industry is navigating an era of profound disruption. Electrification, autonomous driving, supply chain upheavals, and geopolitical tensions are reshaping the landscape. Amid these challenges, visionary leaders like Tavares are in short supply.
Stellantis must now contend with its next chapter without the man who was instrumental in its creation. Whether his successor can match his strategic brilliance and resilience remains an open question.
From rescuing PSA to creating Stellantis, Carlos Tavares leaves behind a legacy of bold decisions and transformative leadership. While his tenure ended amid controversy, his contributions to the industry remain undeniable.
