Learn how Stellantis and other manufacturers are adopting HVO ‘green diesel,’ a renewable fuel that burns cleaner and reduces emissions by up to 90% compared to traditional diesel.

Ever Heard About Green Diesel? Diesel Engine Compatible with HVO

According to Stellantis, all of its diesel engine models are now completely approved to run on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), also known as "green diesel." It emphasizes that many of its Euro 5 and Euro 6 diesel engines are already compatible with HVO, especially those that are marked with 'XTL', which stands for synthetic fuel produced utilizing a'something-to-liquids' process. HVO provides the same performance as traditional diesel and is made entirely of renewable resources.

What is HVO?

Hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) has been in use since 2017, initially embraced by taxis and commercial vehicles in Europe. HVO has significant environmental advantages over fossil fuels because it can cut CO2 emissions by up to 90% when compared to conventional diesel. It also burns cleaner, which reduces NOx and particulate matter emissions. With a cetane rating of over 70, it burns cleaner and faster than mineral diesel, which has a value of only 51.

HVO’s Role in Reducing Carbon Emissions

HVO is not a fossil fuel, making it an attractive choice for decreasing overall carbon emissions. It is a more sustainable option for diesel engines since it reduces reliance on fossil fuels by using renewable resources. In addition to supporting Stellantis' environmental activities, this renewable diesel alternative works with vehicles from numerous other major automakers.

Synthetic Fuels vs. Biofuels

Biofuels like HVO, biodiesel, and bioethanol are different from synthetic fuels like Porsche's e-fuel, which have gained popularity recently. Biofuels are made from organic materials, whereas synthetic fuels are hydrocarbons produced by synthetic processes.

For example, synthetic fuels, which are produced by methods such as hydrogen synthesis and Direct Air Capture (DAC), are not derived from fossil fuels but have a chemical makeup similar to conventional fuels. HVO, on the other hand, is made from organic ingredients such as leftover vegetable oils and is manufactured through a unique technique.

HVO Production Process

Hydro-treating vegetable oils, which entails eliminating contaminants and turning them into premium renewable fuel, produces HVO. In Europe, this fuel is growing in popularity, particularly as its application in automobiles increases. To fulfill the growing demand for sustainable energy alternatives in transportation, major producers, such as the European Union and Brazil, have increased their production of biofuel.
