It's official – Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time Formula 1 world champion, is set to bid farewell to the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team, marking the end of an era that has seen unparalleled dominance in the sport. The British racing icon will be making a surprising move to Scuderia Ferrari starting from the 2025 season.

Silver Arrows and Hamilton Part Ways

After weeks of speculation and numerous reports, both Mercedes and Ferrari have released official statements confirming the unexpected move. Mercedes announced, “The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team and Lewis Hamilton will part ways at the end of the 2024 season. Lewis has activated a release option in the contract announced last August, and this season will therefore be his last driving for the Silver Arrows.

In response to the shocking development, Ferrari released a concise statement that read, “Scuderia Ferrari is pleased to announce that Lewis Hamilton will be joining the team in 2025, on a multi-year contract.”

Lewis Hamilton, who has been with Mercedes since the 2013 season, has clinched six of his seven world titles with the team, adding to the crown he achieved earlier in his career at McLaren. The announcement comes as a surprise, especially since Hamilton had re-committed to Mercedes last summer, signing a new deal that would have kept him with the team until 2025.

Emotional Farewell

In a statement released by Mercedes, Hamilton expressed the difficulty of the decision, describing it as “one of the hardest decisions” he has ever had to make. "I have had an amazing 11 years with this team [Mercedes], and I’m so proud of what we have achieved together. But the time is right for me to take this step, and I’m excited to be taking on a new challenge," said Hamilton.

Mercedes Acknowledges the Legacy

Mercedes Team Principal and CEO, Toto Wolff, acknowledged the historic partnership, stating, "Our relationship with Lewis has become the most successful the sport has seen, and that’s something we can look back on with pride." Wolff also expressed excitement about the future opportunities but emphasized their focus on delivering a strong performance in the remaining 2024 season.

Hamilton's Tribute to Mercedes

Hamilton, in turn, paid tribute to the team, expressing gratitude for the incredible support. "I will be forever grateful for the incredible support of my Mercedes family, especially Toto for his friendship and leadership," said Hamilton. He affirmed his commitment to delivering the best performance in his last season with the Silver Arrows, aiming to make it one to remember.
