Maruti, Mahindra & Hyundai are playing big with their upcoming SUV launches in the year 2023. As 2022 has been a good year for SUV makers, 2023 will see a lot of SUV launches for sure.
Highlights
SUVs have ruled the roost in the Indian auto market. We saw a number of interesting SUV launches in the previous year, and the action is expected to continue in the coming year. Some of the most anticipated SUVs will be available in 2023, both at the upcoming auto show and later in the year. Here are the top six SUVs expected to hit the market in 2023.
The upcoming subcompact SUV that has been spotted testing several times in India. The coupe SUV, internally codenamed YTB, is expected to be slightly larger than the Baleno and to feature a new 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo petrol engine.
The five-door Suzuki Jimny will most likely resurrect the Gypsy badge, and it is one of the most anticipated launches of 2023. A Maruti Suzuki Gypsy test mule has been making the rounds in the Himalayas and is expected to be displayed at the Auto Expo. It will most likely be powered by Maruti's tried-and-true 1.5-litre petrol engine and will feature the all-grip four-wheel-drive system.
The Hyundai Creta facelift is also one of the most anticipated launches of 2023, and it is expected to debut at the auto show. The SUV, which is headed to India, recently performed admirably in the ASEAN NCAP crash test, earning a full five-star rating. The new Creta has a completely redesigned front end, bringing it in line with the Korean brand's new 'parametric dynamic' design language, which we recently saw on the new-generation Hyundai Tucson.
Hyundai recently unveiled the India-spec Ioniq 5 electric crossover, which will go on sale next year. It will have a 72.6 kWh battery pack and an ARAI-certified drive range of 631 km. The motor produces 215 bhp and 350 Nm of peak torque, and the EV can be charged to 80% in 18 minutes using a 350 kW DC charger.
The Mahindra XUV400 electric SUV, which will compete with the Tata Nexon EV, is also set to hit the road in January 2023. It will be powered by a 39.4 kW battery pack and will charge in 50 minutes using a 50 kW DC fast charger, while a full charge will take around 6 hours 30 minutes using a 7.2 kW 32A socket. The electric motor produces 145 bhp and 310 Nm of peak torque and accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in 8.3 seconds, with a top speed of 150 kmph.
A new Mahindra Thar 2-wheel drive variant is being developed and will be available in the first quarter of 2023. It will have a smaller 1.5-litre diesel engine and a few minor changes. The Mahindra Thar 2-wheel drive will be the entry-level variant in the Thar lineup, with the only visual difference being the absence of the 4x4 badge on the rear fender. The cabin will also have an extra cubby hole in place of the 4x4 lever. The rest of the equipment list is expected to stay the same.
