Kia plans to introduce two cars in India named Sorento and Sedona (Carnival in India). Both of these cars are expected to be showcased at Auto Expo 2023.
Highlights
When it comes to Kia's foreign portfolio, its offers in India are simply the tip of the iceberg. Kia's worldwide portfolio comprises the Forte sedan, Sportage SUV, Sorento SUV, Sedona MPV (Carnival in India), K5 sedan, Rio Hatchback, Rio sedan, Telluride SUV, Stinger sports sedan, Rio 5 crossover, Cerato sedan, Niro crossover SUV, in addition to the ones offered in India.
Kia appears to be interested in introducing two automobiles to Indian shores. Sorento and Sedona are their names (new Kia Carnival). According to sources, the new Kia Carnival and Sorento have arrived in India and have been delivered to Kia's facility in Andhra Pradesh. Both vehicles are expected to make their India premiere at the 2023 Auto Expo. The debut of the New Carnival is long delayed, and it remains to be seen whether Kia would consider offering the Sorento in India.
Carnival is a 5.1m long MPV with automatic sliding doors and plenty of interior room. It is powered by a single 2.2L diesel engine coupled to a single 8-speed automatic transmission. This engine was capable of producing 197 horsepower and 440 Nm of torque. Something similar was discovered on Hyundai's now-defunct Santa Fe SUV.
Kia offered the Carnival in 6 and 7-seater configurations with three rows of seats, as well as a 9-seater variant with four rows of seating. Carnival could thus be utilized as both a people mover and a chauffeur-driven automobile. India-spec Carnival is the 3rd iteration of Kia's MPV and the 4th iteration vehicle is offered internationally as Sedona in a few places. Kia's Carnival in India has not been updated in two years, despite the fact that it debuted in 2020 internationally.
The new vehicle is noticeably crisper, losing its van-like appearance and resembling an SUV. It is significantly boxier and proportional, and it looks a lot better than India-spec Carnival. The new Kia Carnival, with its sharper aesthetics and revised interiors, is sure to generate a lot of interest.
The Kia Sorento is a mid-size SUV with dimensions of 4,810mm in length, 1,900mm in width, 1,700mm in height, and a 2,815mm wheelbase. Sorento is essentially a Hyundai Santa Fe in the broad scheme of things when it comes to Kia's corporate cousin Hyundai. Both share platforms, powertrains, and other components. Kia differentiates itself by having seven seats, whereas Santa Fe only has five.
Older version of Santa Fes with 7 seats used to be available in India, competing with Fortuner and entry-level German luxury SUVs like the BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA, and Audi Q3. Due to weak sales, it was canceled with Sonata. If Kia introduces the Sorento in India, it would have to compete with other mid-size SUVs such as the Fortuner. In Europe, the Kia Sorento is available with 1.6L turbo petrol and 2.2L diesel engines. The 1.6L petrol engine is available with self-charging mild hybrid technology or a complete plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Prices for diesel variants start at EUR 49,495 (Rs 40.5 lakh), mild hybrids at EUR 50,995 (Rs 45 lakh), and PHEV powertrains at EUR 56,995 (Rs 50 lakh). Details regarding the India debut are expected to be disclosed next month at the 2023 Auto Expo.
