Mahindra & Mahindra's Former Chairman Keshub Mahindra Passes Away, Leaves Behind a Legacy.
Keshub Mahindra, the illustrious chairman emeritus of Mahindra & Mahindra, passed away at the age of 99 on April 12, as confirmed by Pawan K Goenka, chairman of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center, on his official Twitter account.
Mahindra's association with his father's venture, which initially produced and sold utility vehicles, dates back to 1947. He served as the chairperson of the Mumbai-based conglomerate from 1963 to 2012 and anointed his nephew Anand Mahindra as his successor on his retirement.
A distinguished alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, Mahindra was instrumental in reshaping the company from a mere assembler of Willys Jeeps in India into a diversified conglomerate. Apart from manufacturing tractors and sports utility vehicles, the $19 billion Mahindra Group has a presence in the domains of software services, hospitality, and real estate.
His demise is particularly poignant as it occurred soon after his re-entry into Forbes' roster of India's richest billionaires for 2023.
Keshub Mahindra, who joined his father's company in 1947 after India's independence, ascended to the chairmanship in 1963 and spearheaded the group's fortunes for almost 50 years. During his tenure, the firm transitioned from a steel trading and automobile manufacturing enterprise to a multi-faceted entity with diverse interests in tractors, IT, aerospace, hospitality, real estate, and financial services.
Mahindra handed over the mantle to his nephew in August 2012 but remained the chairman emeritus of the group until his demise. The group's revenue skyrocketed under his guidance, surging from Rs 66 crore in 1963 to Rs 1.6 lakh crore in 2012.
Mahindra's accomplishments and contributions were widely acknowledged and rewarded, including the Chevalier de l'Ordre National de la Légion donner bestowed by the French government in 1987, the Ernst & Young Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007, and the Frost and Sullivan Award for Leadership, Innovation, and Growth in 2015.
Keshub Mahindra's funeral is scheduled for April 13 in Mumbai. The Mahindra Group has extended heartfelt condolences and expressed gratitude for his pioneering leadership and enduring legacy.Mahindra was a distinguished philanthropist who dedicated himself to promoting ethical corporate practices in India and was affiliated with several prestigious organizations and committees.
He was appointed by the government to serve on several committees, including the Sachar Commission on Company Law & MRTP, and the Central Advisory Council of Industries. Additionally, from 2004 to 2010, Mahindra was a member of the Prime Minister's Council on Trade and Industry.
