Mahindra & Mahindra and Skoda Volkswagen India are finalizing a 50:50 joint venture to develop electric SUVs. Learn about their strategic partnership and future plans.
Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) and Skoda Auto Volkswagen India (SANWIPL) are in the final stages of forming a 50:50 joint venture (JV) to collaborate on the development of electric SUVs for both Indian and international markets. This partnership marks a significant step forward for both companies, aligning with the increasing governmental push for electric vehicles (EVs) and stricter carbon emission regulations.
The JV will utilize facilities in Chakan, Pune. Both Mahindra and Skoda VW will use these plants to produce models under the JV.
An official announcement is expected by the end of the year.
The association between VW Group and Mahindra began with a supply agreement on components of Volkswagen’s MEB platform for Mahindra’s INGLO electric platform. The sourcing agreement took two years to finalize and was formalized in February 2024.
This platform will underpin Mahindra's upcoming Born Electric (BE) models. Mahindra plans to invest INR 12,000 crore in its EV business over the next three years.
For VW Group, this JV is a strategic move to strengthen its position in India, the world’s third-largest auto market. The group has struggled with high costs and strong competition, which has limited its market share to 2.24% as of FY 24.
Mahindra plans to launch seven new electric models by 2030.
The company’s new electric range is expected to account for 20-30% of SUV sales by 2027.
Under the leadership of Anish Shah, CEO and MD, Mahindra has adopted a stricter capital allocation strategy. The company is open to partnerships that offer solid benefits.
Despite being present in India for over two decades, VW Group has struggled to gain a significant market share. In FY 24, the group sold 88,412 units, a 9% decrease from the previous year.
The JV is part of VW Group's strategy to adapt to the Indian market amid new regulations and the growing EV trend. India is identified as the second most crucial market for Skoda outside Europe, especially after a slowdown in China and exit from Russia.
Mahindra’s previous JV with Ford Motor Co. ended in January 2021 before it could start.
An earlier association with Renault ended in 2010.
Puneet Gupta, Director at S&P Global Mobility, views this JV as a significant leap for both Mahindra and Skoda Auto Volkswagen in India.
