Mahindra’s BE 6e electric SUV has been rebranded as BE 6 following a trademark dispute with IndiGo Airlines. Discover the details behind the name change and its implications for Mahindra’s EV lineup.
In a significant development, Mahindra has announced the renaming of its recently launched all-electric SUV, the BE 6e, to BE 6. The decision follows a legal dispute with IndiGo Airlines over the use of the “6E” moniker, which the airline claims infringes on its trademark associated with flight codes.
The BE 6e, unveiled in November 2024 as part of Mahindra’s electric vehicle portfolio, has been at the center of a controversy ever since IndiGo’s parent company, InterGlobe Aviation Limited, raised objections to the SUV’s name. While Mahindra has complied with the name change for now, the automaker has made it clear that it will contest IndiGo’s claims in court to protect its rights to the “BE 6e” trademark.
Mahindra clarified that the “BE 6e” trademark application falls under Class 12, which pertains to vehicles, and is distinct from IndiGo’s use of “6E” for airline services. The automaker also highlighted that the “BE” prefix, short for “Born Electric,” is an integral part of its electric SUV branding.
In a statement, Mahindra said, “We believe it differs fundamentally from IndiGo’s ‘6E,’ which represents an airline, eliminating any risk of confusion. The distinct styling further emphasizes its uniqueness. Our registration application is for an entirely different industry sector and product and hence do not see any conflict.”
The company also expressed its disappointment over the dispute, stating that such conflicts between prominent Indian multinationals detract from the shared goal of championing growth and innovation. Mahindra warned that accepting IndiGo’s claim could set a concerning precedent, potentially limiting the use of alpha-numeric names across industries.
Despite the ongoing trademark battle, Mahindra is moving forward with the renamed BE 6, which remains a standout in the electric SUV market. As the first offering under Mahindra’s dedicated “BE” sub-brand, the BE 6 combines futuristic design with cutting-edge technology and impressive performance.
Key features include:
The Mahindra BE 6 is powered by a single-motor, rear-wheel drive (RWD) setup, offered in two configurations:
This makes the BE 6 a formidable competitor in its segment, rivaling models like the Tata Curvv EV and MG ZS EV. It is also poised to take on upcoming challengers such as the Hyundai Creta EV and Maruti eVX.
With introductory prices starting at ₹18.90 lakh (ex-showroom, pan-India), the BE 6 offers a competitive package in the growing electric SUV market.
While the BE 6 is set to hit roads soon, Mahindra’s legal battle with IndiGo is far from over. The automaker has reiterated its commitment to securing the “BE 6e” trademark, viewing IndiGo’s claims as an overreach.
As the situation unfolds, it raises important questions about the intersection of intellectual property rights and branding in an increasingly competitive landscape. Stay tuned for updates on this story as Mahindra and IndiGo continue to make their case in court.
