Mahindra unveiled the XUV400 EV and with that, entered the Indian EV market where it will compete with Tata. Moreover, the interiors seem spacious and the car will be available with more features.
Mahindra has unveiled the XUV400 EV, its entry into the Indian EV market. On the occasion of World EV Day, Mahindra and Mahindra unveiled the new electric SUV, claiming that the XUV400's performance makes it the first made-in-India passenger car in the non-luxury market with the fastest acceleration time of 0-100 kmph in just 8.3 seconds. The XUV400 has a maximum claimed range of 456 kilometers and a top speed of 150 kilometers per hour.
According to M&M, a full charge produces 456 kilometers using the regular Indian driving cycle. The lithium-ion battery pack for the XUV400 has a 39.4 kW output, and the 50 kW DC fast charger can charge the battery pack to 80% capacity in just 50 minutes. The XUV400 charges from 0% to 100% in 6 hours 30 minutes using a 7.2 kW/32A outlet and from 0% to 100% in 13 hours using a typical domestic 3.3 kW/16A outlet. A single synchronous electric motor drives the front wheels of the new Mahindra XUV400, producing a maximum torque of 310 Nm and 145 hp.
“The Mahindra Group is committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2040 and our EV game plan is at the core of the mission. We are doing our part against climate change with the unveiling of the all-electric Mahindra XUV400, a fun-to-drive, generously sized SUV boasting excellent interior room for our discerning customers. The market too is extremely receptive to a clean, enjoyable, and capable vehicle, and we foresee stupendous growth in this category. The XUV400's class-leading acceleration delivers an adrenaline rush, while its exceptional range offers anxiety-free drives. On the eve of World EV Day 2022, we are proud to present to India's young trendsetters the fun and fast XUV400", said Veejay Nakra, President, Automotive Division, M&M Ltd., while revealing Mahindra's first EV.
R. Velusamy, President, Automotive Technology and Product Development, M&M Ltd., while speaking on the R&D of XUV400 said, “We started the development of the XUV400 by leveraging Mahindra's R&D capability with teams spread across Bengaluru, Pune, and Chennai. We have tested the vehicle globally under extreme weather conditions along with testing its fast-charging compatibility in multiple geographies to ensure a seamless experience for our customers. The XUV400 is based on our hugely successful XUV300 platform, which has been engineered to ensure every drive is safe while delivering authentic SUV attributes. Combined with the BlueSense Plus app for control of vehicle functions and status on the mobile application, the XUV400 is a fun, peppy, and stylish e-SUV for all those who are future-ready.”
Customers will be able to test drive the XUV400 starting in December 2022. Prices will be released in January 2023, and reservations will open up in the first week of the new year. Customers will start receiving deliveries at the end of January 2023. Mumbai, Hyderabad, Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Chennai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Goa, Jaipur, Surat, Nagpur, Trivandrum, Nashik, Chandigarh, and Kochi are among the 16 locations the XUV400 will deliver to in its initial round of sales.
The new Mahindra XUV400 will compete against vehicles like the Tata Nexon EV and Max, and MG ZS EV. It is simply a longer-footprint version of the XUV300 subcompact SUV that is powered by electricity. Yes! The new Mahindra XUV400 EV is 1821 mm wide and is more than four meters in length. Its wheelbase is 2600 mm long, and its height is 1634 mm. Compared to the petrol or diesel-powered variant, the inside is more spacious thanks to the extra length, providing improved legroom and trunk capacity. The legroom in the front seat is 1051 mm, in the second row it is 861 mm, and the boot capacity is 378 liters.
Since electric vehicles are not eligible for tax benefits if their length is less than four meters, Mahindra was not required to keep the XUV400's length under four meters. Even though the electric SUV and the ICE-engine XUV300 share many design cues, the XUV400 does appear slightly bigger and more masculine.
Despite this, the radiator grille, which is unnecessary for EVs, has been replaced with a new plastic insert that is embossed with 'X' patterns and finished in slick copper. The new twin-peaks emblem from Mahindra is prominent and coated in satin copper as well. LED headlights with daytime running lights flank the grille (DRLs).
The cabin appears to be quite familiar as it can easily be recognized if you have seen the interiors of XUV300. The cabin is based on similar lines to XUV300. With amenities like a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, automatic climate control, auto lighting, rain-sensing wipers, power foldable wing mirrors, and drive modes, among others, it is almost comparable to the XUV300 in terms of creature comforts. Despite this, it also provides a few extra features, including as over-the-air (OTA) upgrades and more than 60 linked car capabilities.
