Discover why talks between Mahindra & Mahindra and Skoda-VW India for a 50:50 joint venture have stalled, highlighting strategic roadblocks and potential synergies.

M&M and Skoda-VW JV Talks Hit Roadblocks: Key Challenges Explained

A roadblock has been encountered in the negotiations for a possible 50:50 joint venture (JV) between Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) and Skoda Auto Volkswagen India (Skoda-VW India). After many early agreements, the process is stagnating as the two corporations are unable to agree on important matters, according to people involved with the talks.

Slow Progress Despite MoUs

A number of non-binding Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering different facets of the possible joint venture have been inked by M&M and Skoda-VW India in recent months. As talks lagged, final agreements that were once anticipated by the end of the month have been postponed.
M&M and Skoda-VW India did not reply to inquiries on the issue.

On August 30, the Economic Times originally reported that the corporations were considering a joint venture.

VW Group’s Strategic Push

The Volkswagen Group, encompassing brands like Skoda, Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, and Lamborghini, has been considering equity offloading to share costs and risks in India. The potential JV would focus primarily on the Skoda and VW brands, aiming to leverage:

  • M&M’s frugal development costs
  • Efficient sourcing capabilities

This collaboration could yield backend synergies and expand market share, potentially helping the two companies capture one-fifth of India’s passenger vehicle market.

M&M’s Strength and Concerns

With well-known SUV models including the XUV700, Scorpio N, and Thar, M&M is a dominant force in India. However, the corporation has been cautious due to its prior joint venture experiences, including its cooperation with Ford.

According to sources, M&M is unlikely to make concessions in the new relationship around sourcing and development expenses.

Incremental Capacity and Technological Access

  • Through the JV, M&M may have access to the cutting-edge technology and extra production capacity of the VW Group.
  • The Chakan factory in Pune, which is owned by Skoda-VW India, has the ability to produce over 200,000 vehicles a year with space for future growth.
  • The VW Group sold over 145,713 cars in India in 2023, up 8% from 2022.

Financial and Strategic Implications

With more than ₹19,000 crore in cash reserves, M&M is well-positioned to make wise investments. India continues to be a vital market for VW Group. At Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, Piyush Arora, Managing Director and CEO, said, "There is always an opportunity to partner, but it should align with strengthening our market position." Skoda-VW India is now negotiating a further financial infusion with its parent firm. In the upcoming months, a decision is anticipated.
