Maruti Suzuki Hustler, a boxy Kei car, spied in India, could rival Tata Punch if launched in an Indianized version.
Maruti Suzuki, one of India's leading car manufacturers, might be gearing up to introduce a new contender in the growing mini SUV segment. Recently, a test model of the Suzuki Hustler, a popular Kei car from Japan, was spotted in India. This sighting has sparked speculation about whether Maruti Suzuki plans to launch the Hustler as a rival to the well-received Tata Punch.
The Tata Punch has quickly become a favorite among Indian car buyers, often topping sales charts across various segments. Despite this, Maruti Suzuki has yet to release a direct competitor to the Punch. The recent sighting of the Suzuki Hustler test mule in India could signal a change in that dynamic.
Captured by Delhisupercars, the spy shots reveal a Suzuki Hustler without any camouflage, though the Suzuki logo and Hustler branding were masked to keep its identity under wraps. Despite this, the car’s distinct Kei car design and Suzuki’s signature styling were easily recognizable. The vehicle spotted had a light white/silver exterior with a dual-tone finish, featuring a darker gray roof that seamlessly blends into the C and D pillars, as well as the top half of the rear tailgate.
The Suzuki Hustler sports a boxy silhouette, typical of Kei cars, with a large glass area that enhances visibility. The car is equipped with crossover elements like roof rails and body cladding, giving it a rugged appeal. The Hustler also features a flat and upright bonnet, with wheels pushed to the edges, minimizing overhangs and maximizing interior space.
Despite its small size, the Hustler offers a quirky and spacious interior that can comfortably seat four adults. Built on Suzuki’s Heartect platform, Hustler’s design is a blend of practicality and style, catering to those who appreciate the unique charm of Kei cars.
At 3,395 mm in length and 1,475 mm in width, the Suzuki Hustler is smaller than most vehicles in the Indian market. If Maruti Suzuki decides to launch it here, it’s likely that the Hustler will undergo modifications to better suit Indian preferences. This could mean a longer and wider version, similar to what Hyundai did with the India-spec Exter, which is based on the Korea-spec Casper.
Given the declining popularity of the Maruti Suzuki Ignis, which the Hustler could potentially replace, the Hustler might find a niche in the Indian market as a stylish and compact alternative. However, there’s also a chance that Maruti Suzuki might not launch the Hustler in India, as the company has previously tested global models in India without introducing them to the market.
The sighting of the Suzuki Hustler in India has certainly piqued interest, but whether it will make its way to Indian showrooms remains uncertain. As Maruti Suzuki continues to explore new opportunities in the mini SUV segment, the Hustler could emerge as a strong competitor to the Tata Punch, offering Indian buyers a new and exciting option in the near future.
More details about the Suzuki Hustler and its potential launch in India are expected to emerge in the coming months.
