The upcoming Maruti Suzuki Jimny is anticipated to rival Mahindra Thar petrol because of higher fuel efficiency and affordable pricing in India. The new Jimny claims to offer up to 16.94 kmpl ARAI-certified mileage. In comparison, Mahindra Thar has ARAI-c
One of the most-awaited 5-door, subcompact SUVs, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny’s launch, is very near, and bookings have already opened since its debut in India in Auto Expo 2023 with record bookings of 30,000 units. The upcoming Maruti Suzuki Jimny is announced to be offered only in petrol variants to directly compete with Mahindra Thar, which is currently available in petrol and diesel powertrain options and manual and automatic transmissions.
CarBike360 experts have compared 5-door Jimny and Mahindra Thar based on fuel efficiency and specifications.
Maruti Suzuki 5-door Jimny gets power from a 1.5-liter K15B aspirated petrol engine and is available in a 5-speed manual and 4-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.
According to ARAI-certified fuel mileage revealed by the company, the new Jimny with manual transmission provides 16.94 kmpl mileage. In comparison, the automatic transmission variant offers 16.39 kmpl certified mileage.
The engine of the all-new Jimny produces 104.8 PS of power and 134.2 Nm of peak torque. This upcoming SUV also packs a Suzuki’s ALlGrip Pro 4x4 system (available with low-range transfer gear).
Now talking about Mahindra Thar petrol, this SUV is powered by a 2-liter MStallion TGDi turbocharged petrol engine coupled with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.
This engine configuration can produce up to 150 HP of engine power and 300 Nm of peak torque. Further, Mahindra offers customers the option to choose a 4X4 (with high & low reduction rear) or RWD (rear wheel drive) drivetrain.
Additionally, the Mahindra Thar petrol variant with manual gears has an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 12.4 kmpl. In contrast, the Mahindra Thar petrol with automatic transmission’s ARAI-certified mileage is unavailable. These are ARAI-certified mileage and can vary depending upon road conditions.
However, if we talk about the actual mileage of the Mahindra Thar petrol variant, we can expect 10.4 kmpl to 11.4 kmpl mileage in both automatic and manual transmission variants. Thus, regarding fuel efficiency, the Maruti Suzuki 5-door Jimny is better than the Mahindra Thar.
Mahindra Thar delivers lower fuel mileage because it has a robust and more powerful powertrain than the new Jimny. In contrast, the Jimny offers 4.5 kmpl more fuel mileage than the Mahindra Thar and is priced lower.
The ex-showroom price of the Mahindra Than petrol RWD variant commences from Rs 13.87 lakh, while the top-end 4WD variant is priced at Rs 16.10 lakh. In comparison, the ex-showroom price of the upcoming Suzuki Jimny is expected to fall around Rs 9 lakh to Rs 12.7 lakh.
