Max Verstappen secures his fourth consecutive Formula One championship, joining an elite group of legends.
Max Verstappen, the Dutch prodigy of Formula One, solidified his place among the sport’s legends by clinching his fourth consecutive world championship at the Las Vegas Grand Prix. At just 27, Verstappen joins a rare echelon of drivers with four titles, but his eyes are already set on navigating the fierce competition brewing for 2025.
Only six drivers in Formula One history have claimed four world titles, and Verstappen’s consecutive victories place him in even rarer company alongside Sebastian Vettel (2010–2013). Michael Schumacher remains the only driver to achieve five straight titles, a feat Verstappen now aspires to match.
Verstappen has dominated the standings since May 2022, recently surpassing Schumacher’s record of 896 days as the championship leader. He is guaranteed to hold that position until the 2025 season opener on March 16 in Australia.
The 2024 season was marked by Verstappen’s resilience. He started strong, claiming pole position in the first seven races and winning seven of the first 10. However, Red Bull’s dominance faded mid-season, leaving him winless for 10 consecutive races.
The turning point came at the chaotic Brazilian Grand Prix, where Verstappen staged a stunning comeback from 17th to claim victory in torrential rain. Reflecting on the season, Verstappen said, "There were quite a few lows, but they taught me a lot about myself and the team. I'm proud of how we kept it together and still came out on top."
Despite the challenges, Verstappen maintained remarkable consistency, clinching the championship with a 63-point lead, even as rival teams McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes gained ground.
The 2025 season promises intense competition, with McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes poised to challenge Red Bull’s supremacy. Notably, Lewis Hamilton’s anticipated move to Ferrari adds a new layer of excitement, as does the rise of multiple race winners across the top teams.
Verstappen anticipates "a proper battle between a lot of cars" in what could be the most competitive season in years. Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali echoed this sentiment, predicting an even closer fight for the championship.
Verstappen’s triumph comes amid significant upheaval within Red Bull. Long-time designer Adrian Newey’s departure and allegations of improper conduct against team principal Christian Horner cast shadows over the team’s stability. Additionally, Verstappen’s relationship with teammate Sergio Perez has become increasingly strained, with Perez struggling to match his teammate’s pace.
Despite his dominance, Verstappen remains un-obsessed with breaking records. "I don’t care about winning eight titles or beating the win record," he told Reuters. "I want to look back and say, 'Yes, I had a good time in racing, and I loved my life.'"
While his contract runs until 2028, Verstappen has hinted that he may not remain in Formula One for much longer. "I could continue until I’m 40, but I don’t want to," he said, emphasizing his desire to live a balanced life outside of racing.
Verstappen’s career trajectory has been remarkable, from his controversial 2021 championship win against Hamilton to his record-breaking 19 victories in 2023. His aggressive driving style, often compared to legends like Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher, has sparked both admiration and debate.
Red Bull’s Christian Horner lauded Verstappen’s achievements, saying, "He’s been in a class of his own this year. He deserves this fourth world championship, placing him among the elite of the sport."
As Verstappen gears up for 2025, the stage is set for a thrilling battle among the sport’s top teams and drivers. With his unmatched skill, consistency, and determination, Verstappen remains the driver to beat, but the path to a fifth consecutive title will be anything but straightforward.
The coming season promises to be a spectacle of high-octane racing, strategic brilliance, and fierce rivalries, and all eyes will be on Verstappen as he seeks to further cement his legacy in Formula One history.
