The Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 4Matic has been launched in India. It is the first Mercedes-Benz EV built in India, and it has the longest range of any EV in the country.
Mercedes-Benz has introduced the EQS 580 4Matic in India, priced at Rs 1.55 crore (ex-showroom). The locally produced vehicle is priced lower than the recently announced Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 S and is Rs 90 lakh less than the completely imported AMG version. The EQS 580 4Matic boasts the longest range of any EV on the market in India, with an ARAI-certified range of 857km.
Surprisingly, the EQS undercuts the locally produced S-Class by Rs 5 lakh (ex-showroom) due to a lower 5 percent GST on electric vehicles against 28 percent on ICE-powered versions. Furthermore, with most states waiving the EV road tax, the ultimate on-road pricing differential between the EQS and the S-Class is higher.
The EQS 580 4Matic is also Mercedes-Benz's first domestically built EV, and India is the only place outside of Germany where the EQS is assembled.
The EQS 580 4Matic, as expected, features a more subdued look than the EQS 53. It receives a less aggressive front bumper, a blanked-out grille with many lighted three-pointed stars, and smaller 20-inch five-spoke wheels. The EQS 580 4Matic is slightly shorter in length than the S-Class at 5,126mm, but both have a nearly equal wheelbase of 3,210mm.
The EQS 580's cab-forward, coupe-style form has allowed Mercedes-Benz to achieve a drag coefficient of 0.20Cd - even lower than the EQS 53's 0.23Cd - making it the world's most aerodynamic production car, according to Mercedes. The EQS 580 4Matic is available in five exterior color options and two interior upholstery options from the manufacturer.
The EQS 580, like the EQS 53, has a 107.8kWh lithium-ion battery pack. It transmits power to two electric motors, one on each axle, which provide a total output of 523hp and 855Nm. This results in 238hp and 165Nm less than the EQS 53. With all that power, the EQS 580 4Matic can go from 0 to 100 in 4.3 seconds and has a peak speed of 210kph.
The battery pack is compatible with 200kW DC fast charging, which Mercedes claims adds 300km of range in only 15 minutes, and the EQS 580 has an ARAI-certified range of 857km on a single charge, as previously stated.
The EQS 580, like the EQS 53, features a 'Hyperscreen,' which is effectively three displays connected together by one continuous glass panel that spans the length of the dashboard from pillar to pillar. The driver and front passenger each have 12.3-inch displays, while the infotainment system in the center has a 17.7-inch display. There are 12 actuators to provide users with haptic input, and the Hyperscreen comes with pre-installed games.
The EQS 580 4Matic additionally has 3D maps, a heads-up display, a massaging feature for the front seats, a Burmester 3D sound system, air filtration, and an MBUX tablet similar to the S-Class for rear seat occupants. The EQS 580 is equipped with nine airbags, lane change and lane maintain assist, and an emergency stop system, and it received a complete five-star crash test rating from Euro NCAP. The EQS 580 4Matic also has rear-wheel steering, but it will only be available to the first 500 clients.
In terms of competitors, the Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 4Matic competes with the Audi e-tron GT and the Porsche Taycan. The Mercedes is Rs 25 lakh less than the e-tron GT and Rs 5 lakh less than the Porsche Taycan.
