The all-electric Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology debuts in India on January 9, 2025. Featuring a 116 kWh battery, quad-motor AWD, a range of 473 km, and revolutionary off-road capabilities like G-Turn, this EV redefines luxury SUVs.
Mercedes-Benz India has announced the much-anticipated launch of the G 580 with EQ Technology, the all-electric version of its iconic G-Class SUV. Scheduled to make its India debut on January 9, 2025, the G 580 combines legendary off-road capabilities with the innovation and sustainability of an electric vehicle (EV). Here’s an in-depth look at this groundbreaking luxury SUV.
The G 580 stays true to the iconic design language of the G-Class but incorporates subtle updates to enhance aerodynamics. The boxy silhouette, rugged proportions, and signature upright stance remain, with changes like a closed-off front grille and discrete EQ badges signaling its electric identity.
Aerodynamic innovations include a reworked A-pillar, a sculpted bonnet, and a roof-mounted spoiler, helping achieve a drag coefficient of 0.45 Cd, which is 0.10 Cd better than its ICE counterpart. Additionally, a newly designed lightweight alloy frame further reduces air resistance, making the G 580 not only an off-road beast but also an aerodynamically efficient vehicle.
At the rear, buyers can opt for a charging cable holder in place of the traditional tailgate-mounted spare wheel, offering a modern touch without compromising functionality.
The G 580’s quad-motor all-wheel-drive system is a technological marvel. Each wheel is powered by its own centre-lock forged-wheel-mounted motor, ensuring precise torque vectoring and superior off-road dynamics. This setup replaces the traditional mechanical differentials with virtual electronic differentials, delivering 579 hp and an impressive 1,164 Nm of peak torque.
Mercedes-Benz has equipped the G 580 with a 116 kWh battery pack, offering a range of 473 km (WLTP). This powertrain supports 200 kW DC fast charging, capable of charging from 10-80% in just 32 minutes, while also being compatible with 11 kW AC chargers, ensuring convenience for long journeys. Despite its electric nature, the G 580 maintains the G-Class’s off-road DNA, ensuring unparalleled performance both on and off the tarmac.
The G-Class legacy remains intact in the G 580, which introduces cutting-edge off-road features such as:
Inside, the G 580 offers the same luxurious interior as its ICE sibling, featuring dual 12.3-inch digital screens for instrumentation and infotainment. The signature dashboard grab handle, premium materials, and advanced ambient lighting further enhance its appeal.
EV-specific tweaks include:
The G 580 is significantly more aerodynamically efficient than its petrol counterpart. The drag coefficient of 0.45 Cd, compared to the G 450d’s 0.48 Cd, contributes to improved energy efficiency. The lightweight alloy frame, coupled with the 116 kWh battery pack, ensures the SUV achieves an ideal balance of power and range.
Mercedes-Benz claims a 0-100 km/h time of under 5 seconds and a top speed of 180 km/h, showcasing the G 580’s dynamic capabilities. Despite this performance, the electric drivetrain addresses range anxiety effectively, offering an ideal blend of power, efficiency, and sustainability.
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has always been a category-defining SUV with no direct rivals, and the G 580 takes this legacy forward. By offering an uncompromised off-road experience in an electric package, it caters to a niche audience seeking luxury, performance, and sustainability.
The combination of quad-motor technology, off-road prowess, and iconic design ensures the G 580 retains its position as an aspirational SUV, appealing to enthusiasts and eco-conscious consumers alike.
The G 580 has been available for bookings in India since July 2024, with the model expected to arrive in limited numbers as a CBU import. Mercedes-Benz’s decision to launch the G 580 underscores its commitment to introducing cutting-edge EV technology to the Indian market.
This debut is set to be a game-changer for the luxury EV segment, offering Indian buyers a glimpse into the future of sustainable off-road adventure.
