Mercedes-Benz unveils the G-Class Edition ‘Stronger Than The 1980s’, a limited-run tribute to the original W 460 G-Wagen, featuring retro styling, exclusive colours, and modern off-road capabilities.
Mercedes-Benz has taken the wraps off a new limited-edition G-Class variant, and it's a nostalgic throwback that’s sure to stir memories among off-road and classic SUV aficionados. Called the G-Class Edition ‘Stronger Than The 1980s’, this special edition pays homage to the original G-Wagen, the legendary W 460 series that first debuted in 1979. With only 460 units available globally, this edition isn’t just a collector’s delight but a rolling tribute to one of Mercedes’ most iconic models.
Staying true to its name, the Edition ‘Stronger Than The 1980s’ draws heavy design inspiration from the first-generation G-Class. Starting with the colour palette, Mercedes-Benz has dipped into its MANUFAKTUR archive to offer three solid-tone, retro-style colours: Agave Green, Cream, and Colorado Beige. All three finishes scream 1980s and lend the boxy silhouette of the G-Wagen an old-school charm.
Further reinforcing the nostalgic theme, the G-Class special edition gets silver 5-spoke alloy wheels reminiscent of the original design, a blacked-out grille and bumpers, and even protective grates on the headlamps, a classic W 460 feature. The turn indicators on the front fenders are fitted with period-correct orange lenses, and even the Mercedes star on the bonnet has been replaced with one styled after the 1980s logo. Subtle yet rich in detail, the SUV also gets black wheel arch extensions and side runners, staying faithful to the rugged aesthetic of the original.
At the rear, the nostalgia continues. The tailgate proudly wears ‘Mercedes-Benz’ badging in the original script from the W 460 era, while the usual hard spare wheel cover has been replaced with a soft cover featuring a bold Mercedes-Benz logo, another hat tip to the classic design.
Step inside, and the retro touches are even more pronounced. The seats feature grey fabric centre sections, closely resembling the upholstery used in the 1980s G-Class models. One of the more delightful Easter eggs is the ‘Schöckl Proved’ badge, redesigned with an image of a period-correct G-Wagen rendered in the chosen body colour. The passenger-side grab handle bears the ‘Stronger Than The 1980s’ branding, and the centre console is embossed with ‘1 of 460’, reminding occupants of the model's exclusivity.
While the edition ‘Stronger Than The 1980s’ is rich in retro vibes, Mercedes-Benz hasn’t compromised on its modern off-road credentials. The special edition G-Class is fitted with all-terrain tyres as standard, ensuring it remains just as capable on dirt trails and mountain passes as its ancestor. The model is expected to retain the current-gen G-Class mechanicals under the skin, which means it should come with the trusted ladder-frame chassis, three differential locks, and a low-range transfer case, key ingredients that define the G-Wagen’s legendary off-road prowess.
As of now, Mercedes-Benz India has not confirmed if any of the 460 units will make their way to Indian shores. However, the brand does have a history of bringing special editions of the G-Class to the country. In 2023, the AMG G 63 Grand Edition was introduced in limited numbers for the Indian market, so there remains a possibility that a few units of the edition ‘Stronger Than The 1980s’ could land here as well, perhaps via the CBU (Completely Built Unit) route.
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class Edition ‘Stronger Than The 1980s’ is more than just a retro-styled SUV: it’s a celebration of heritage, a nod to the rugged and utilitarian origins of one of the most celebrated nameplates in the automotive world. With just 460 examples being built, the edition serves as both a collectible and a love letter to fans of the classic G-Wagen.
Whether or not this special edition makes it to Indian garages, one thing is certain: the legacy of the G-Class continues to evolve while proudly embracing its roots. And for those lucky enough to own one, this edition will be a tangible connection to a golden era of automotive design and engineering.
