With a compact size and affordable price point, the Comet EV is poised to make an impact in the mass-market EV segment.
MG Motor India launched the highly anticipated MG Comet EV at the starting price of Rs. 7.98 lakh, which is poised to become the smallest electric vehicle (EV) in the Indian market. Despite its small size, the Comet EV boasts impressive features and capabilities, positioning itself as a compelling option for urban mobility. MG Comet EV is the sixth model from MG Motor India.
Bookings will be open from 15th May for New MG Comet EV.
As the second all-electric vehicle from MG Motor India, following the success of the ZS EV launched in 2020 and updated earlier this year, the Comet EV has generated considerable buzz in the growing mass-market EV segment.
This segment is currently dominated by Tata Motors and its popular models such as Nexon EV, Tigor EV, and Tiago EV. The launch of the Comet EV raises the question of whether it will be able to make a significant impact in this competitive landscape.
MG Motor made its debut in the Indian market in 2019 with the introduction of the Hector SUV, which was later joined by the Hector Plus, Gloster, Astor, and ZS EV. While these vehicles are positioned at various points along the company's product portfolio, the Comet EV represents the beginning of MG Motor's lineup, signalling its intention to cater to a wider range of Indian consumers with its innovative and sustainable urban mobility solutions.
MG Motor is positioning the Comet EV as an optimal solution for navigating the congested city streets of India. As a micro electric car, it is smaller in size than the Tata Nano and boasts an impressive turning radius of just four meters, making it highly manoeuvrable in tight spaces. Produced locally at the carmaker's Halol manufacturing facility in Gujarat, the Comet EV showcases MG Motor's commitment to investing in the Indian market and catering to the unique needs of Indian drivers.
The Comet EV's compact dimensions are noteworthy, measuring 2,974mm in length, 1,505mm in width, and standing at a height of 1,640mm. The car's wheelbase is 2,010mm, and it features 12-inch steel wheels. Despite its small size, the Comet EV promises to offer a comfortable and convenient ride for city driving.
The MG Comet EV offers a range of customization options, including body wraps, stickers, and various accessories. From the showroom, the car is available in three single-tone colours (White, Black, and Silver) and two dual-tone colour options (Green with Black roof and White with Black roof), providing buyers with a variety of choices to suit their personal style.
MG Motor, a subsidiary of SAIC, has utilized the design of the Wuling micro-electric car from China as a basis for the development of the Comet EV.
As shown in images of the Wuling Air EV, the Comet EV features many of the same design elements, with some interior elements also inspired by this Chinese EV. While MG Motor already has an all-electric offering in the form of the ZS EV, which was first launched in 2020 and updated earlier this year, it is positioned as a premium option with a starting price of around Rs. 23.40 lakh.
In contrast, the Comet EV offers a more affordable option for consumers looking for a small electric car. Although the Comet EV can be charged using a fast-charging plug, it does not support fast-charging and can be fully charged in around seven hours according to the company.
According to MG Motor India, its manufacturing plant in Halol, Gujarat, has the capacity to produce up to 3,000 units of the Comet EV per month.
The Comet EV is equipped with a digital key that eliminates the need for a physical key to unlock and operate the vehicle. This innovative feature enables the owner to share access with multiple individuals, further enhancing its convenience and versatility.
With its iSmart technology, the Comet EV boasts an impressive array of around 55 apps and over 100 voice commands, highlighting its advanced connectivity and user-friendly interface.
In addition to its fast-charging plug, the MG Comet EV can also be charged using a conventional 16 amp wall socket, providing owners with flexibility and convenience in powering their vehicle.
