MG Motor India's new MG Select showrooms will focus on new-age luxury vehicles, with a special emphasis on NEVs. Launching in 12 major cities by Q1 2025.
MG Select is a fresh retail outlet opened by MG Motor India which is dedicated to the brand's premium car lineup. The firm describes these dealerships as selling only "new-age luxury" cars, with an emphasis on offering a distinctive and superior shopping experience.
MG Select is set to commence operations in 12 major cities across India by the first quarter of 2025. In addition to these major urban centres, JSW MG Motor India also plans to expand its Select outlets into smaller cities, broadening the reach of its premium offerings. These outlets will be designed with distinct dealership aesthetics and communication strategies to establish their own identity.
Unlike other premium car dealership models, MG Select will not use a fixed price point to differentiate its offerings from those of regular MG dealerships. Instead, the focus will be on the luxury experience, which MG calls “new-age luxury.” Speaking on this, Gaurav Gupta, Chief Growth Officer at JSW MG Motor India, explained that the pricing won’t separate the dealerships, but the luxury experience will be accessible and affordable.
A key focus for MG Select showrooms will be on new energy vehicles (NEVs), including hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and fully electric vehicles. This move aligns with the growing trend of electrification in the luxury vehicle market. Currently, while EVs account for only 2% of overall sales in India, they represent 7% of sales in the luxury segment. Gupta emphasised that MG sees this as the future for their premium vehicle lineup.
Despite the premium focus, MG Motor India has chosen not to launch MG Select under a completely separate name, as seen with other brands like Maruti Suzuki’s Nexa. Instead, MG has opted for the MG Select suffix, aiming to further strengthen the overall MG brand. According to Gupta, the strategy will allow the two dealership channels to mutually enhance each other’s presence.
Although MG has not fully revealed the lineup for its new premium channel, it is anticipated that the MG Cyberster sports car will be the first model to be sold through MG Select showrooms. This electric sports car, showcased earlier this year in India, is expected to serve as a halo product, shaping the brand’s image in the premium segment. MG plans to launch four all-new products under the Select umbrella in the first two years of its operation.
JSW MG Motor India has invited its existing dealership partners to open MG Select outlets, and many have shown interest. As the company progresses with the launch, the focus will remain on expanding the premium dealership network to both large and smaller cities, with a continued emphasis on NEVs and high-end, locally built models.
MG Select represents a strategic move to tap into India’s growing demand for premium and electrified vehicles, and the company aims to differentiate itself by offering cutting-edge luxury with a focus on sustainable technology.
