MG plans to expand its electric lineup in India with a compact SUV based on the Comet EV, set to launch in 2025.
MG Motor India is set to launch the MG Comet electric city car in May 2023, which is expected to create a stir in the Indian EV market with its compact size, three-door design, and extensive equipment list. Additionally, MG Motor India intends to develop more vehicle models based on the Global Small Electric Vehicle (GSEV) platform, starting with a micro SUV.
MG's Upcoming Electric Compact SUV to Feature Advanced Battery and Powertrain TechnologyGiven MG's efforts to localize the Comet hatchback and its components, including the use of Tata Autocomp as a battery supplier, it's not unexpected that the next model will be closely related to taking advantage of this localization.
The new compact electric SUV, codenamed E260, will be based on the GSEV platform and share the Comet's three-door layout while being slightly larger in size. Measuring under three meters in length, it's designed as a space-efficient city car rather than a practical vehicle.
It's possible that the new compact electric SUV will borrow its design from the Yep micro SUV concept showcased by Baojun, MG's sister brand in 2022. The concept has a retro boxy shape similar to the Comet, reminiscent of the Maruti Jimny or Ford Bronco, which is expected to appeal to Indian customers. While the SUV will ride higher than the Comet, it will also feature larger wheels and tires.
The Comet is equipped with a 17.3kWh battery and a single rear-mounted motor that generates 40hp, whereas this new concept features a dual-motor system with over 100hp and all-wheel drive. It's unclear if the Indian production model will feature similar specifications.
MG is planning to launch the micro SUV based on the GSEV platform in 2025 and has sufficient time to localize its components to ensure an affordable price. Although it is likely to be priced higher than the MG Comet, it is expected to fall in the range of Rs 12 lakh-15 lakh (ex-showroom).
There are no direct rivals for this type of SUV in India, with the closest being the Citroen eC3 crossover. Similar to Comet, MG plans to distinguish this SUV from the competition by focusing on technology and interior quality, which will be on par with more expensive cars.
