MG all set to bring an entry level EV in India starting at the price of INR 10 Lakhs. The MG Air EV is scheduled to debut in middle of 2023
MG is all set to bring an entry-level EV to India starting at the price of INR 10 Lakhs. The MG Air EV is scheduled to debut in the middle of 2023.
MG Motors has recently been in the news as it introduced its MG Air EV in the European market. The British Automaker is also preparing to introduce the compact EV in the Indian market. Therefore, the spotlight on this European launch is a must. Testing of the MG Air EV, which is scheduled to debut in the middle of 2023, was conducted in Gujarat. The Auto Expo in January 2023 is most likely where the tiny EV will make its debut.
The MG Air EV is a variation of the Wuling Honguang EV, which is offered in China, but it appears to have grown in size. Since the Wuling group controls MG, the EV will probably be introduced in India under the MG moniker. The MG Air EV's function in the market is readily apparent from the exterior. The EV is small and has only two doors. The Air EV has a chamfered-edged cube-like appearance from the side, and it will operate more cheaply as a city commuter than a petrol two-wheeler. The little car also has big back windows that don't seem to be retractable, as well as drag-reducing wheel coverings.
The Air EV sports twin-pod LED headlamps lower down and an LED bar light up front that spans the width of the car before wrapping around it to blend with the rearview mirrors. LED DRLs positioned below the headlamps in the place of the fog lamps may also function as turn signals. The underside of the EV includes a small grille that might serve as a vent to cool the battery pack. In addition, the EV has an under-logo charging port up front, just like the original MG ZS EV.
The car's interior has a dual-tone finish and a very contemporary appearance. The layout is identical to that of the Hyundai IONIQ 5, and the vehicle has two 10.25-inch displays, one for the infotainment system and the other for the instrument cluster. The dash features a simple design with just three rotating knobs, which could be air conditioning controls, aside from the screens. In addition, the gear selector has a rotary knob. A 2-spoke steering wheel with numerous controls is included. The cabin is tiny and overall seems to be extremely clean. Only two seats are available in the back, and it's unclear how roomy they will be at this point. With all seats occupied, it appears from the photographs that the rear seat has been moved all the way back. While this may free up some leg room, there won't be any space for luggage.
According to reports, the MG Air EV will have two battery options, with an anticipated range of 200–300 kilometers. Either a single-motor system producing 30kW (40.23 bhp) or 50kW (67.05 bhp) will power the EV. Tata AutoComp, which has a joint venture with Chinese battery provider Gotion for the design, manufacturing, supply, and servicing of battery packs in the nation, is projected to be MG's local source for battery packs.
Mahindra had previously attempted to dominate this market with two vehicles, the e2O and e2O Plus, but the project had little success, in part because there was no charging infrastructure in place at the time. It will be fascinating to watch how this car performs in our market given the steadily growing number of charging stations.
