Hyundai's new Creta enhances safety with a robust exoskeleton, ADAS features, and potential for higher crash test ratings.
In the relentless pursuit of enhanced automotive safety, Hyundai takes a significant leap forward with the introduction of the new Creta, boasting a fortified exoskeleton that promises to elevate the crashworthiness to new heights. The latest model not only showcases advanced safety features, including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), but also emphasizes a strengthened exoskeleton designed to create a robust protective shell for all its occupants.
Ensuring the safety of the occupants inside the vehicle requires a comprehensive strategy that combines the advanced materials and structural reinforcements. The new Creta focuses on utilizing the high-strength steel to withstand the immense kinetic energy generated during a crash. Critical areas such as the crash members, floor, side sill, and crash pad have been reinforced to enhance the structural rigidity and absorption of energy.
Modern safety engineering also incorporates the crumple zones in the vehicle's design, absorbing the impact during the crash and minimizing the transfer of energy to the passenger compartment. The integration of crash-absorbing materials further enhances the energy depletion during the collisions, contributing to the overall safety.
While the new Creta's exoskeleton does present a robust appearance, its true effectiveness can only be measured through rigorous crash tests. The 2022 model, equipped with two airbags, underwent Global NCAP testing and received a 3-star adult safety rating along with a 3-star child safety rating. While this is a commendable score, there is still room for improvement, particularly when compared to the compact SUVs like the Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun, which have achieved a 5-star safety rating in Global NCAP crash tests.
Several other popular compact SUVs, including the Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, Honda Elevate, MG Astor, and Citroen C3 Aircross, are still awaiting evaluation by Global NCAP.
The Creta's sibling, the Kia Seltos, also faces the challenge of improving its crash test ratings. In a 2020 test with two airbags, the Seltos achieved a 3-star adult safety rating and a 2-star child safety rating. There is speculation that both the new Creta and the new Seltos may undergo Bharat NCAP crash tests, offering an opportunity to demonstrate their improved safety features, including the ADAS. It is anticipated that the enhanced safety kits could potentially result in higher crash test ratings for both the models.

Hyundai's commitment to safety is evident in the new Creta, where a strengthened exoskeleton is complemented by an array of standard safety features and ADAS options. While the Global NCAP ratings provide a baseline, the upcoming Bharat NCAP tests may further underscore the efficacy of these advancements. As car manufacturers continue to push the boundaries of safety innovation, the automotive landscape is set to witness a new era where the reinforced exoskeletons and advanced safety technologies merge to create a safer journey for all.
