Audi has unveiled the new-gen A5L long-wheelbase sedan for China, debuting at Auto Guangzhou. Discover its features, specs, and the potential for an Indian release.
The Chinese market-focused A5L long-wheelbase sedan has been formally introduced by Audi ahead of its debut at the Auto Guangzhou car show. The A5L is the replacement for the A4L, a vehicle that was originally designed with China in mind. This most recent model positions itself as an extended, high-end substitute, coming after the new-generation A5 was released globally earlier this year.
Built on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) architecture, the Audi A5L is the first vehicle in the Chinese market to use this platform. The A5L deviates from the liftback appearance of the ordinary A5 variant by maintaining a conventional three-box sedan profile, although sharing similarities with its European equivalent at the front end. This decision is in line with the tastes of the local market, where traditional sedan designs are still much sought for.
Although the specifications for the A5L's powertrain have not yet been finalised, it is anticipated that the vehicle would include Audi's new 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine coupled with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. There may also be other engine alternatives available that are suited to regional tastes. The A5L's production will be coordinated with FAW, Audi's Chinese manufacturing partner. Audi also unveiled its own market sub-brand, AUDI, and displayed the Q6L e-tron SUV at the auto show.
Audi has not yet released comprehensive inside photos of the A5L, although it is anticipated that the main interior elements of the worldwide A5 model will remain. Highlights to be expected include:
The new Audi A5L's expanded body, designed for more legroom, is one of its most notable features. The vehicle's overall length is 4,902 mm, which is 73 mm longer than the European variant. Furthermore, the wheelbase has grown by 65 mm to 2,965 mm, enabling much wider rear doors and a more elegant rear design that improves comfort and appearance.
Whether Audi plans to introduce the long-wheelbase A5L to India is still up in the air. Similar to China, long-wheelbase cars are popular in India, so the A5L could carve out a place for itself in the market. Taking advantage of the local need for more rear-seat comfort, rival automakers such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW have already released expanded versions of their cars for India. India may be among the first markets to accept the A5L with right-hand drive if Audi does the same.
